Position Description

Performs specialized Post Doctoral work in the planning, conducting and/or supervision of original research. Responsible for participating in a research project associated with PhD studies and the interpretation of the results of publication. Work is performed under supervision of graduate faculty members with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

About the Department and/or College

Founded in 1925 as one of the university's four original colleges, the College of Arts & Sciences is comprised of 15 departments, offering a wide variety of courses and programs in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, mathematics, physical sciences, and natural sciences. The College has more than 10,000 students enrolled representing more than a quarter of the overall Texas Tech University student population while maintaining a 22:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

The Department of Kinesiology and Sport Management offers a B.S. in Kinesiology and an M.S. in Kinesiology for over 1,400 undergraduate and 40 graduate students, respectively. The department enrolls over 400 undergraduate students in the B.S. in Sport Management and over 50 master's degree students in the M.S. in Sport Management. It also offers a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology. Its building includes six classrooms, a student computer lab, and faculty offices.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Assist with carrying out intervention and experiments to meet research objectives.
  • Maintain detailed logs and records of experiments, observations, and findings.
  • Participate in project planning and development of experimental protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.
  • Perform analysis of data using statistical software.
  • Assist in training junior team members.
  • Participate in research dissemination (manuscripts, scientific presentations, etc.).
  • Develop an independent project within the scope of the parent study and submit for funding.
  • Other duties as needed/assigned.

Required Qualifications

PhD in area of project specialization. Knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources, and standards thereof. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions and other outcomes. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to plan and allocate the workload of employees, providing direct training and supervision as needed.

Preferred Qualifications


  • PhD in exercise physiology, biological sciences, biochemistry, or related field. MD or equivalent may also be acceptable with substantial research experience.
  • Knowledge of modern research practices and the methods, resources, and standards thereof.
  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  • Strong written and oral scientific communication skills.
  • Experience in one or more laboratory techniques relevant to the project such as mammalian cell culture, RT-qPCR, immunoblotting, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, etc.
  • Research experience in skeletal muscle physiology, exercise physiology, metabolism, or diabetes.
  • Human participants research experience.
  • Experience in grant writing or assisting with grant submission.
