Job Summary

The Applications Engineer & Advanced Product Technician applies professional concepts, department / unit and campus / medical center / OP policies and procedures to resolve a variety of complex issues in one or more Information Technology (IT) areas of specialization. Analyzes complex issues. Within defined procedures and practices, determines appropriate action.

Primary responsibility involves monitoring, detecting, protecting, and maintaining the security of Data, systems (electronic and physical-mechanical keys), and networks. Plans, configures, designs, develops, implements, and maintains tools, systems, and procedures to ensure the integrity, reliability, and security of data, systems, and networks. Assignments may include database administration, application programming, systems administration, systems and process analysis, security, solution development and maintenance, business technical support, or a combination of these and / or other IT functions.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $101,300 - $151,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Facilities Services Department (FS) is committed to creating an exceptional campus physical environment to support the research, teaching, health care and community service mission of the University. FS employs over 465 professional staff/contractors and acts as steward for over $95 million in operating funds and $28 million in capital funds annually to achieve its goals in operating, maintaining, and renewing the UCSF campus environment consisting of 9 million GSF of research, clinical, administrative, and auxiliary services space. Located in the Campus Life Services organization, FS is organized into 5 distinct units: (1) Operations & Maintenance, including Custodial Services (380 FTE), (2) Engineering & Utilities (45 FTE), (3) Infrastructure & Renewal Programs (20 FTE), (4) Customer Service & Technology (15 FTE), and (5) the Office of the Assistance Vice Chancellor (7 FTE).

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Information Assurance and Security or related area and 5 years relevant experience and / or equivalent experience/training.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT such as Access Controls and Advanced Masterkey Systems
  • Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis.
  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases.
  • Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements.:Knowledge of access control, security video, keying and key management doors, ADA, /BC -
  • Means of Egress, and the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret as-builts, plans, and specifications.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Honevwell Pro-Watch Advanced (certification preferred)
  • Exacq Vision video with IP cameras (certification preferred)
  • Allegion and Medeco keying systems, key control, and smart keys (certification preferred)
  • University and/or Medical Center experience; experience in a laboratory or research setting
