Job Summary

Assists with biological field research in the Florida Everglades. Coordinates day-to-day field crews. Assist the Principal Investigator (PI) with planning needs over the short and long term project goals.

  • Coordinate day-to-day fieldwork sampling schedule, sample workup, data quality control, and data management in the lab for the assigned project(s).
  • Manages and maintains Scientific Collection permits and EHS permits/protocols for assigned projects.
  • Train and supervise student associates or temp staff employees associated with your project(s) as requested by the PI.
  • Interprets and Implements policies and safety procedures. Adheres to the Environmental Health and Safety standards.
  • Conduct field sampling in the Everglades, coordinating with the helicopter contractors and collaborating labs, as required.
  • Develop and document statistical models, statistical codes and assessments of data as required by funding agencies and in collaboration with the PI.
  • Assists PI with resource planning needs over the short- and long-term. Communicates and coordinates project needs with the lab manager and other project leads in the lab.
  • Update and develop standard operating procedures for the assigned project. Make recommendations for procedural and policy changes as necessary as they pertain to the assigned project(s).
  • Write and edit timely reports as required by the contractual agreements.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and three (3) years of experience.

Departmental Requirements

  • Must be able to meet at start of field work at 6am and complete workdays that may extend to 5pm or later without advance notice.
  • Must demonstrate ability to conduct field work in locations lacking cell phone contact and be willing to fly to study sites in a helicopter or ride by airboat.
  • Experience in assisting with writing technical reports.
Desired Qualifications

  • Institutional Animal Use and Safety (IACUC) training. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply boating safety skills.
  • Education in a science related field or STEM.
  • Ability to identify South Florida fish and macroinvertebrates, and aquatic plants.
  • Experience and knowledge of statistical data analysis tools such as SAS or R.
  • Use of ArcGIS or similar software to produce maps.
  • Experience in the field of ecology or environmental science.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook).
