Job Summary
The Department of Pathobiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University seeks applicants for a Research Assistant II/III/IV. The selected candidate will assist in research relating to the prediction of the pathogenicity for chickens of emerging strains of virulent Newcastle disease viruses, following relevant policies, procedures, regulations and laws. Research approaches used in this position involve characterization of viral proteins in vitro, with little, if any, work with live virus or animals.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts routine or fundamental experiments, investigations and/or studies related to programs and projects in pursuit of new knowledge, techniques and concepts.
  • Assists in the development of project proposals, plans and protocols.
  • Orders and organizes necessary research supplies.
  • Subclones synthetic genes into expression plasmid vectors.
  • Modifies expression plasmids by site-directed mutagenesis.
  • Produces recombinant proteins in eukaryotic cells.
  • Purifies recombinant proteins by affinity chromatography.
  • Optimizes protocols for characterization of recombinant proteins.
  • Characterizes recombinant proteins, including their enzyme activity, tissue binding ability, and antibody reactivity.
  • Records, compiles, processes and analyzes data/samples.
  • Documents procedures, results, and observations in writing as well as presenting results to others.
  • May assist in the preparation of research results for publication or presentation at conferences to include assisting in literature reviews and assisting in the writing of results and discussions.
  • May instruct students and/or supervise others' research in area of expertise.
  • May assist researchers with other Newcastle disease virus-related projects as needed, possibly including collection of samples from chickens.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Level II - Bachelor's degree in a discipline appropriate to the position and 2 years of experience in research practices and protocols.

Level III - Bachelor's degree in a discipline appropriate to the position plus 4 years of experience in research practices and protocols.

Level IV - Bachelor's degree in a discipline appropriate to the position plus 6 years of experience in research practices and protocols.

Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed. When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
