  • This is a temporary, full-time, hourly paid position open to current students who will be returning to their studies once this work term is complete.This position is not available for remote work.
  • Work will be both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.Outside the office, standard work wear will consist of hard hats, safety boots, safety glasses and ear plugs, with other items as needed; these items will be provided
  • Location: Aurora, North Carolina
  • Term (6 months):Dates can be adjusted/extended to coincide with school terms.

    • Spring 2025- January 6 - July 25
    • Fall 2025- June 2to December 19





What you will do:




  • Mine Planning Department:

    • Become familiar with aerial photos, mine plans, geologic maps and cross sections, groundwater trend charts and utility construction schedules
    • Become familiar with GPS surveying equipment and computer applications
    • Become familiar with Autodesk Map 2004 and the generation of 2D drawings
    • Assist in conducting production advance field surveys forPrestripping, Mining and Mine Services activities along with the associated survey calculations and mapping
    • Become familiar with groundwater measurement instruments and sampling protocol
    • Assist in conducting surface and groundwater field sampling projects
    • Assist in the scanning of documents and drawings for proper archiving
    • Assist the Mine Planning Superintendent, Mine Planning Engineer and Senior Surveyor on safety and environmental audits and inspections


  • Mining Department:

    • Perform time and motion studies of equipment operation
    • Perform time and motion studies of repetitive equipment moves
    • Study and recommend improvements to pipe tracking system
    • Assist in analysis of ore pumping system options
    • Assist in economic analysis of production and maintenance activities
    • Update and recommend improvements to production reports.


  • Mill Department:

    • Work with Flotation Technician to develop additional concentrator testing to improve recovery
    • Work with Flotation Technician and vendor to reduce reagent consumption and reduce unit cost
    • Develop matrix and trend chart to show relationship between coal sulfur content and AES
    • Research and develop Calcining energy efficiency program to reduce BTU per ton of calcined rock





What you will bring:



  • Must be currently enrolled and have completed at least 1 year of an undergraduatedegree in Mine Engineering or equivalent related program at an accredited post-secondary institution AND returning to full-time studies after the work term.
  • Demonstrate positive safety behavior and leadership
  • Willingness to learn and gain knowledge and experience through training
  • Strong interpersonal teamwork and communication skills
  • Motivation to set and achieve goals, take initiative, and nurture project forward
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
  • Must be able to work at heights, outdoors, and around potentially hazardous chemicals
  • Must be comfortable and physically capable of entering and working in a confined space
  • Must be able to hear and understand audible alarms, changes in noise levels of rotating equipment and portable radio communications
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft's Office Suite
