Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate (SRA) II will participate in the investigation of the cardiopulmonary health effects of inhalation of tobacco smoke and other air pollutants. The SRA II will be under direct supervision of Dr. Mehrdad Arjomandi. The SRA II will assist with collection and processing of human biological samples including blood, urine, sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage, and resected lung tissue samples for further molecular and functional characterization of the immune and non-immune cells using a variety of ex-vivo and in-vitro assays such as flow and mass cytometry, genomics, and functional assays.

In addition, the SRA II will assist with maintaining and organize a cryo-biorepository of human biological samples including live-frozen primary human cells in liquid nitrogen and human plasma and BAL samples in ultra-cold freezers. The SRA II will also assist in maintaining accurate records for the biorepository as well as the associated clinical data from the participating human subjects.

The SRA II will also assist with recruitment, screening, coordination of the visits of the human subject participants who donate biological samples. The SRA II may also assist in performing tests such as pulmonary function testing, skin allergy testing, questionnaire administration and vital signs measurement.

Furthermore, the SRA II will maintain accurate data records, enter data, process, store, and ship biological samples, perform lab-based assays on human biological samples, assist in maintaining and monitoring all equipment and procedures for quality control, assist in trouble shooting discrepancies, ordering and stocking lab supplies and perform other duties as assigned.

This is a critical position requiring fingerprinting and background check prior to hire, as the incumbent will have direct access to controlled substances or hazardous materials and direct access to and is responsible for protected, personal and other sensitive data.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM), the largest department in the School of Medicine, has close to 600 full- time faculty leading top-notch research, clinical, and education programs. The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four sites (Parnassus, ZSFG, SFVAHCS and Mt. Zion) and 38 divisions. Authority and accountability for the Department rests with the Department Chair who heads the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites, and also directs the Vice Chairs at the ZSFG and SFVAHCS sites.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Knowledge of general lab and cell biology/culture procedures.
  • At least one year of experience with cell culture techniques including sterile techniques, maintenance of cell lines, freezing and thawing of samples, in vitro cell assays such as cell survival assays and migration assays.
  • Experience with general molecular biology techniques such as ELISA assay, DNA and RNA purification, PCR assay, genotyping, and western blot.
  • Strong programming skills.
  • Willingness to work with human blood, tissue, bronchoalveolar lavage samples, etc.
  • Willingness to work with human subjects, including assisting with procedures involving human subjects, such as obtaining and processing bronchoalveolar lavage and human lung tissue from proceduralist, surgeon, or pathologist.
  • Willingness to consent patients for clinical studies and to work with clinical staff to collect samples.
  • Computer literate; advance database skills including knowledge of Microsoft Excel; Able to learn Microsoft Access, R/Bioconductor.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Detail oriented; works with a high level of accuracy.
  • Professional and motivated attitude experience with cell biology, tissue culture, flow cytometry, molecular biology, or related experience in a laboratory setting.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Intermediate/Advance Understanding of statistics.
  • Data analysis with Excel.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with of electronic health records.
  • Wet lab work experience.
  • Experience working with the UCSF Committee on Human Research
