Organizational Unit Overview
Overview of the College - Health and Human Performance (HHP)
The College of Health and Human Performance ( HHP) is comprised of eight units: The Department of Health Education and Promotion, Department of Human Development and Family Science, Department of Interior Design and Merchandising, Department of Kinesiology, Department of Recreation Sciences, School of Social Work, Air Force ROTC, and Army. We are a community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and partners working together to offer transformational educational experiences, impactful scholarship that aims to improve health and quality of life for all, and public service that establishes trust and benefit within our community of constituents. We offer 13 undergraduate degree programs, 8 master's level degree programs, 2 doctoral degree programs, and several other educational credentials (minors, certificates, and microcredentials).
Overview of the Unit within the HHP - School of Social Work
The School of Social Work was established in 1972 and has offered accredited social work degrees since 1974. It is the second oldest social work program in North Carolina. The School offers a BSW (current enrollment: 252) and MSW (current enrollment: 138) with the latter being one of the largest graduate programs on main campus. The alumni base is over 5,000. Field education is the signature pedagogy in the School of Social Work. On average School students contribute nearly 100,000 hours of field education annually in agencies serving Eastern North Carolina's most vulnerable, for a significant economic impact across 53 counties. The School of Social Work offers two undergraduate minors, Gerontology and Promoting Equity in Health & Human Services, and two graduate certificates, Gerontology and Substance Abuse as well as pathways into child welfare and school social work licensure. The Substance Abuse certificate trains a significant number of the Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialists serving clients in Eastern North Carolina, and provides more affordable supervision toward clinical licensure aimed mostly at increasing the number of underutilized groups working as addictions specialists. The School's efforts to enhance its role in interprofessional education at ECU have been considerable and are gaining momentum.
