Senior Project Engineer

Position Summary

Under minimal supervision and working from formal product specifications or generally stated objectives, is responsible for all Engineering aspects of new product development from initial product conceptualization through engineering development and pilot run to production implementation. Will also provide engineering support of current product lines through product quality improvement projects, solving customer related or production problems, and cost reduction programs. Ensures that products can be manufactured and marketed in alignment with the overall goals of the product line and to the expected quality standard.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Prepares, schedules, coordinates and monitors all design & engineering activity for assigned projects from conception to launch.
  • Leads design efforts for assigned projects: confirm product requirements/design targets with Product Marketing & Project Manager, develop design strategy and related schedule (concept development, prototype plan, test plan),
  • Leads various meetings (Design Reviews, DFMEA, DFM/DFA) with project team & internal customers to report out on design development and ensure design outputs meet requirements and expectations.
  • Develops, reviews and checks engineering drawings, computations, simulations, testing results, estimates, etc. and reports for completeness, accuracy, and soundness of applied engineering principles and governing standards and policies. Creates corrective actions as necessary.
  • Develops product cost BOM as design develops, and coordinates with Product Marketing to ensure business targets are met.
  • Determines design criteria in accordance with applicable standards and codes.
  • Generates Test Plans, as appropriate, to verify design meets performance and quality requirements for the product.
  • Coordinates and performs testing to evaluate new designs and assists the Engineering Lab Manager when needed.
  • Generates/updates Product Specifications to document product configurations, operating range, features, & performance attributes.
  • Coordinate with Operations Team members to validate new tooling (per design requirements), ensure smooth introduction into manufacturing, and provide post launch design support to improve yield, cycle time, or ease of manufacturing.
  • Assist with the development of intellectual property materials, including preparing and reviewing documents in support of original patent applications.
  • Provides guidance and work supervision for other technical personnel.
  • Coordinates with Certifications Engineer to prepare required documentation for listing agencies in accordance with industry standards.
  • Provides technical product detail to support development of marketing collateral
  • Assists in the preparation of periodic departmental performance reports.
  • Provides support for operations with quality or manufacturing issues as necessary.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience: 5 years of related engineering experience in the product design/manufacturing industry

Skills and Abilities: Microsoft Office Suite, CAD (Autodesk Inventor preferred, Solidworks, Pro Engineer), project scheduling/planning

Competencies: Need to possess strong interpersonal, ability to communicate effectively, maintain confidential information, exercise sound judgment, make accurate and timely decisions, the ability to multi-task and work with teams in a fast-paced environment, and have strong analytical and problem solving skills.

Other Qualifications (Preferred, but not required):

  • Experience qualifying products using PPAP
  • Knowledgeable in the design of injection-molded plastic parts high volume manufacturing processes and quality practices.
  • Knowledgeable in the design of sheet metal products and sheet metal fabrication methods (i.e.-stamping, spinning hydroforming)
  • Knowledgeable in the design of cast, forged and machined metal products and the associated manufacturing methods
  • Experience with 3D scanning process & equipment
  • MBBI/ASME/CSA/IAPMO/NSF experience
  • Knowledge of distribution plumbing, safety valves, valve function, design (strength of materials, hydraulics, etc.)

Working Conditions

  • This position work primarily in an indoor office environment and the Engineering laboratory. The position will also require work in a factory environment.
  • Domestic and internation travel expected to support project plans (supplier qualification, offsite/field testing, tooling validation, etc).

Physical Demands

  • Job requires both sitting and standing. Good vision, hearing, speech and motor skills are required to perform essential functions of the job.
