Job Summary

The MRSO - Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer role involves developing, managing, and implementing an MR safety program for all clinical MR locations within the Department of Radiology at UCD Health. This includes updating policies and procedures in line with ACR guidance, maintaining MR safety databases, and ensuring up-to-date employee training records. Additionally, collaboration and training of faculty, staff, and managers in other departments, as well as maintaining relationships with outside vendors for in-services, are important aspects of the role. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring compliance with ACR safety regulations and recommendations, as well as enforcing proper policies and procedures for day-to-day MR safety. Regular site visits and collaboration with various managers are also part of the role.

The incumbent should be an experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with an in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. Applies skills and experience as a seasoned quality data and / or improvement (QI) specialist to projects of medium size at all levels of complexity, or to portions of large projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • ARRT/ARMRIT Certification as an MRI Technologist
  • MRSO - Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (ABMRS)
  • Bachelor's degree in the healthcare profession or a combination of comparable clinical education and/or experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of direct work experience in MRI
  • Proficiency in MR physics.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the role and necessity of MR safety training.
  • Mastery of safety standards and ability to assess risks posed by the static magnetic field.
  • Complete knowledge of safety standards and ability to assess risks posed by time-varying gradients.
  • Expertise in safety standards and ability to assess risks posed by the radiofrequency field.
  • Profound understanding of the labeling and conditions of implants in MRI.
  • Capability to handle emergency situations in the MRI environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the safety standards and risks associated with GBCA.
  • Full competency in applying the ACR Manual on MRI Safety and Joint Commission Requirements.
  • Understand the legal implications of MRI safety through knowledge of QA/QI standards, clinical chart review and abstraction, and regulatory requirements.
  • Thorough knowledge of QA/QI models, measurement tools, and techniques, including collection, aggregation, abstraction, validation, analysis, and reporting of data.
  • Detail-oriented, with proven ability to effectively manage time, see projects through to completion, organize competing priorities, and effectively address complex, urgent issues as they arise.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage multiple levels of information and responsibilities, to quickly assess complex problems, and to develop and implement timely and effective solutions.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to work with complex information, determine impact, identify risks, evaluate approaches, and develop solutions within the context of priorities, time constraints, and available resources.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with a broad range of clinical and technical staff and representatives of external regulatory agencies and for mentoring lower-level QA/QI staff.
  • Strong skills required to effectively convey complex clinical and technical information both verbally and in writing and to produce high-quality reports and documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of various administrative and business software packages, and of the specialized applications for quality data management.
  • Strong skills to influence staff, management, and clinicians at all levels and across departments.
  • Knowledge and ability to provide guidance on quality indicators or metrics, describing how they relate to patient care and safety.
  • Ability to perform statistics and analysis of data including interpretation and correlation.
  • Ability to prepare reports using applicable software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point, Visio), and to present reports to various departmental and hospital committees.
  • Possess technical knowledge of Radiology exams and processes.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, hospital and departmental regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements pertaining to Radiology.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance, quality system essentials, quality improvement, benchmarking, metrics, data analysis, and audit processes.
  • Ability to collect data and synthesize information from a variety of sources; Radiant (RIS), EPIC EMR, RL Solutions, and other programs as necessary.
  • Full understanding of the Radiology Quality Map and how each step impacts the patient, recognizing that at each point there is opportunity to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Knowledge to assess and recommend changes to maintain compliance with federal and state requirements and internal policies.
  • Political acumen and collegial communication skills to interact with persons at all levels of the hierarchy with varying backgrounds, levels of expertise, interest, and personal investment.

Department Overview

The Department of Radiology is a 24-hour, seven day a week operation providing imaging services to adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatients.

Department Specific Job Scope

Must be able to travel throughout the UCDH Campus.
Work occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends, usually on short notice to meet operational needs.
Must be able to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including senior leaders, physicians, managers, supervisors, technologists, and a wide variety of non-technical staff.
During emergent staffing situations, the incumbent may be asked to perform complex Magnetic Resonance Imaging procedures to produce diagnostic images of the human anatomy and vascular structures following prescribed protocols.
