Historian - Architectural Historian

S&ME is looking for an eager and dedicated Historian - Architectural Historian to join our Environmental team in Charleston, South Carolina.

About the Role:

As a Historian - Architectural Historian, you will collaborate with project managers to conduct fieldwork and archival research, contributing to historical and architectural surveys and evaluations. You possess a solid understanding of American architectural styles and are well-versed in applying the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria to assess historic resources. Additionally, you bring knowledge, interest, or experience in environmental and cultural resources compliance, supporting projects that protect and preserve our heritage.



  • Research: Assist with historical research in local, state, and regional libraries, archives, and government offices.
  • Historic Resource Surveys and Assessments: Conduct fieldwork for historic resource surveys may include site visits, site plan sketches, and related duties. Record activities may include conducting historic and archival research, developing historic and/or architectural contexts, and making National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations.
  • Forms and Documentation: Assist with the preparation of historic property inventory forms, including statements of significance and architectural descriptions. Documenting historic properties potentially impacted by state or federal undertakings.



Salary range: $20 - $30 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

About You:



  • You have a Bachelor's degree in history, historic preservation, architectural history, or a closely related field
  • You have experience in historical research and writing, including being able to present clear, precise, analytical, and authoritative arguments. S&ME may request a writing sample from qualified candidates
  • You can proficiently conduct architectural field surveys, complete state site forms, and utilize geographic information system software
  • You are willing and able to regularly travel out of town, including overnight, for project work as necessary
