Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is $58,300 - $80,100/yr. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $62,000 - $70,000/yr.

About the Job

Reporting to the Associate Director of Transition Programs in the Calvin E. Bright Success Center, the Coordinator of Transfer, Returning, and Veteran Student Services provides the full range of assessment, program and event development, counseling, and advice to transfer, returning, veteran, and veteran dependent students at UC Merced. Working independently, the Coordinator receives guidance on complicated problems and situations. The coordinator is responsible for developing active partnerships and collaborations with the Bright Success Center team, Residence Education, Basic Needs, School advising units, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Center, the Center for Career and Professional Advancement, the Office of Student Involvement, Enrollment Management, and external constituents to advocate for and support transfer, returning, and veteran scholars' academic, professional, and personal success with particular emphasis on time to degree completion and campus engagement. The coordinator will lead the coordination and facilitation of the Gateway Transfer Scholars program. The Gateway Transfer Scholars program is designed to support Gateway High School Scholars' transition to and through Merced College and transfer to UC Merced. The coordinator should have awareness of current trends in higher education pertaining to first-generation and low-income college students, as well as to the identified student group.Reporting to the Associate Director of Transition Programs in the Calvin E. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides multicultural academic coaching across disciplines and colleges/schools to transfer, returning, veteran, and veteran dependent students and works with academic departments, faculty, and department management to help resolve specific student academic issues. Develops and implements programs and services designed to support retention and transition for participants. In addition, develops and fosters partnerships on and off campus that support non-academic student needs that contribute to student retention (i.e. Counseling and Psychological support, food security, financial aid, housing, child-care, career planning, employment opportunities, Veteran Affairs, etc.)
  • Lead the coordination and facilitation of the Gateway Transfer Scholars, which is designed to support Gateway High School Scholars' transition to and through Merced College and transfer to UC Merced.
  • Responsible for program budget management and resource allocation. Responsible for collecting, reporting, and assessing data associated with student retention and developing programs that address student success.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of students' issues and needs and provides solutions and alternatives to address problem areas. Refers students to appropriate campus and off-campus resources. Assists students with the academic research process, including developing a question and hypothesis, selecting appropriate quantitative or qualitative research methods, evaluating evidence, and writing reports. Keeps abreast of student trends and assessments in higher education, particularly those pertaining to transfer, returning, veteran, and veteran dependent students.
  • Develops and plans program content, identifies student learning outcomes, and manages relevant program data for assessment.
  • In collaboration with the Center for Career and Professional Development, develop and implement strategies that focus on career development and/or professional and graduate school opportunities.
  • Recruit, select, train, and supervise team of student paraprofessionals: 8 Student Assistants.
  • Designs and implements an informative outreach campaign in partnership with University Marketing, the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, California Community Colleges, and County Social Services to aid in recruitment of transfer, returning, and veteran students.
  • Plans, implements, and instructs academic and personal development courses for first-year transfer students (Undergraduate Studies 10).
Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area from an accredited institution.
  • Master's degree in relevant area. (Preferred)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a related field.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS

  • Direct experience with academic counseling needs for Veterans advocacy, transfer, returning and degree completion.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practice of counseling, learning, human and career development.
  • Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college, underrepresented, disadvantaged, physically challenged, and under prepared students in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling, and analyzing data, and generating reports.
  • Knowledge of research methodologies and research designs.
  • Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
