Department Description

The Per Diem Dietitian provides medical nutrition therapy for adult and pediatric patients in inpatient and outpatient areas, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, as assigned. Primary responsibilities include nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention and evaluating patient response to nutrition interventions. This position coordinates nutrition services with patient food services and the patient care team and participates in multidisciplinary team and department committees and projects. The Per Diem Dietitian contributes to the dietetic internship: acts as a preceptor for dietetic interns, teaches assigned classes, and may participate in curriculum development for an assigned area. May participate in promotional or community activities for UC Davis Health. Participates in compliance and performance improvement activities. Maintains professional competence.

The Clinical Dietitian uses the Scope of Dietetics Practice Framework (SODPF) to determine scope of practice, established Standards of Practice and Professional Performance (SOP/SOPP) in nutrition care and practice-specific dietetics, and, as available, evidence-based practice protocols/nutrition practice guidelines to help determine nutrition intervention(s).

Dietitian Per Diem 1

Minimum Qualifications

  • Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or eligible to sit for the RD/RDN exam and must pass RD/RDN exam within 6 months of completing an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)-accredited supervised practice program. A Registration Eligible employee works under direct supervision of a RD/RDN.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required based on area assignment within 3 months of hire or upon an assignment change requiring BLS.
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in food and nutrition/dietetics (or equivalent field) from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university (or foreign equivalent).
  • Successful completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics and supervised practice experience, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  • Must be registered with the Commission of Dietetic Registration. Must maintain registration by participating in continuing professional education.
  • Strong academic background and applied background in clinical nutrition.
  • Knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy principles, including enteral and parenteral nutrition support.
  • Experience using computers for daily tasks and communications including word processing and spreadsheet software. Ability to learn and effectively and efficiently use computerized patient applications.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with peers, patients/families, multidisciplinary team members, and dietetic interns.
  • Effective teaching skills as preceptor for clinical experience as well as teaching group classes for interns, health care professionals, and the public.
  • Must be able to travel to hospital clinics and Primary Care Networks.
  • Must be able to work variable days and hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience or majority of clinical training in a large teaching hospital/academic medical center.
  • Experience teaching and supervising dietetic interns or other students.
  • Greater than one year of acute care experience.
  • Pediatric work experience or extensive pediatric clinical nutrition training.
  • Experience using electronic medical record strongly preferred.

Clinical Nutrition Services provides nutrition assessment and interventions to both inpatient and outpatient populations at UC Davis Health, and is a part of the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Department. FNS provides for all food services and clinical nutrition needs for the UC Davis Health Sacramento campus and network of primary and specialty care practices in the greater Sacramento region.
