Job Summary

The Shady Rest Institute on Positive Aging within the Marieb College of Health & Human Services at Florida Gulf Coast University invites applications for an Associate/Full Professor (non-tenure track) position in exercise science. Areas of specialization should include a focus on aspects of exercise and physical activity as a means to promote positive aging.

The Shady Rest Institute on Positive Aging was established in 2022 as a university-wide entity to strengthen interdisciplinary inquiry on aging and the life course, with the specific aims of advancing research to optimize the aging experience of diverse populations and preparing future leaders for the field of gerontology. The Institute will draw upon the expertise of faculty, staff, and students from across the FGCU campus, fostering a vibrant interdisciplinary community.

As Associate/Full Professor in exercise science, you will teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as applicable be involved in course and/or curriculum development conduct research/scholarship participate on College and University committees and/or initiatives; will work effectively with diverse populations of students, colleagues, and members of the community; and will support the overall work of both the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and the Shady Rest Institute on Positive Aging.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Plans and delivers lectures in assigned courses.
  • Prepares syllabi and instructional materials.
  • Coordinates lectures, tests, and evaluations.
  • Maintains highest possible standards of classroom instruction.
  • Keeps abreast of new information and developments in field of instruction.
  • Actively serves on university committees.
  • Actively participates in institutional meetings.
  • Maintains professional skills through regular professional development, and other activities appropriate to higher education faculty.
  • Assists with the development of curriculum.
  • Demonstrates evidence of grantsmanship.
  • Establishes an active research program.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in Exercise Physiology or related health profession from a regionally accredited institution. Previous teaching experience in an Exercise Science program or similar.
  • Master's degree in Exercise Science from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Established record of scholarly productivity in the area of exercise science and/or aging/gerontology as well as evidence of quality teaching and meaningful service (in line with a faculty member at the rank of Associate/Full Professor).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced certification in Exercise Science through the American College of Sports Medicine (ASCM) or National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
  • Established research agenda with evidence of extramural funding.
  • Evidence of quality teaching and meaningful service.
  • Experience teaching courses relevant to aging/gerontology.
  • Focus on interdisciplinary research addressing current topics related to aging/gerontology.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly/creative achievement through presentation, publication, and/or performance commensurate with career stage.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to collegial and collaborative engagement with colleagues to support an increasing, diverse, multicultural student population.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Experience with and commitment to the use of instructional technology, a willingness to cultivate an interdisciplinary perspective; and a demonstrated commitment to professional development.
  • Experience or commitment to the use of technology in distance learning & university teaching. Interest in collaborating both within and outside the University in the development and delivery of instruction resulting in improved student learning. Must value continued scholarship and service to the school and university.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both written and oral).
  • Ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the excellence of the Shady Rest Institute on Positive Aging.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.

Appointment will be made on a 9-month multi-year appointment basis available August 2024.
