Director, Women's Services

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is currently seeking a Women's Services Director. Under the direction of the Administrative Director of Women's and Children's Services, the Service Director is responsible for the provision of administrative support and oversight for Women's Services. Provides authority and accountability for the nurse executive functions; participates with leaders from the administrative leadership team, management, medical staff and clinical areas in the hospital's decision making structures and processes; coordinates and carries out assigned projects to effectively support the hospital's immediate and long range objectives; shares the responsibility for administration of the day-to-day operation of the hospital; carries out the philosophy and general objectives of the hospital. The position must assume that the hospital's stated mission and philosophy are appropriately reflected and demonstrated in all assigned functions and relationships. This position is supported by the Clinical Manager, Assistant Manager, two Educators and Clinical Nurse Coordinators.

The Service Director is responsible for developing strategic goals for the department/service grouping as well as fiscal year business plans required to achieve such goals. The Service Director translates strategies into day-to-day operations.

The Birth Center consists of 12 Birthing Rooms (12 beds), 8 High Risk Antepartum rooms, 3 bay Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), 4 bed OBED and 2 OR's. The philosophy of this unit is to foster family unity in a home-like environment while providing safe and therapeutic care to obstetric and neonatal patients. Registered Nurses in the Birth Center are certified in BLS, ACLS, and NRP.

The Mother Infant Unit (MIU) consists of 24 rooms and 29 beds; 5 rooms can accommodate semi-private occupancy, and a Level I newborn nursery area designed for the purpose of providing respite when needed, observation of high-risk infants, and a procedure room. The philosophy of the unit is to foster family unity in a Baby Friendly environment while respecting parental choices regarding feeding and rooming- in, providing safe and therapeutic care. Health Care providers in this area mimic those in the Birth Center with the inclusion of pediatric care providers and lactation specialists. Registered Nurses in the MIU are certified in BLS and NRP.

MIU provides supportive care of the mother/infant dyad with focus on the family, infant and self-care procedures and education. Both human milk and formula feeding are supported and educated to, with special emphasis on the benefits of human lactation.

Major Accountabilities/Specific Job Competencies

Management



  • Understands, supports, and promotes the organizational values inherent in the philosophy of the hospital.
  • Performs job duties in a manner which demonstrates the values of the hospital and its commitment to a customer focus.
  • Manages the responsibility for the development, approval, and implementation of standards of nursing practice which support the mission and vision of the hospital and regulatory agencies.
  • Participates with the administration, medical staff, and clinical representatives in developing the
    hospital's mission, strategic plans, budgets, resource allocation, community outreach, operation plans and policy, making decisions and taking action consistent with the accepted standards and values of the hospital.
  • Participates in policy decision affecting patient care services at relevant levels of decision making with the system in accordance with the mission and values of the hospital.
  • Participates in developing and implementing mechanisms for collaboration between nursing staff members, physicians, and other clinical practitioners.\
  • Cooperates with other departments to accomplish hospital objectives.
  • Establishes goals and objectives for the assigned departments.
  • Operates department in compliance with other regulatory agency requirements.
  • Maintains communication with all department employees.
  • Complies with Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates employee performance and recommends salary changes.


Fiscal/Resource Management



  • Develops the budget, in collaboration with other leaders and hospital personnel according to department policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the management of the assigned department's budget including capital and operating budgets.
  • Participates along with other nursing management personnel in the ongoing review of the hospital's operating plans, policies, and practices.
  • Coordinates patient placement/requirements for nursing care with available nursing resources.
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs to promote recruitment, retention, development and continuing education of nursing staff members.E
  • Ensures adequate department equipment, materials and supplies are available.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of mechanisms for recognizing the expertise and performance of nursing staff members engaged in patient care.
  • Collaborates with other management and clinical leaders to develop mechanisms for promoting the educational and advancement goals of hospital staff members.
  • Participates in evaluating, selecting, and integrating health care technology and information management systems that support patient care needs and the efficient utilization of nursing resources.
  • Collaborates with educators to determine curricula including clinical/managerial learning
    experiences.

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory standards through leadership and guidance which results in excellent patient care delivery, documentation, reimbursement, and successful site surveys.

  • Participates and promotes concepts of Magnet Journey.


Education



  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and
  • One of the following Master's Degrees: MSN, MBA, MHA


Certifications, Licenses, Registrations



  • California RN license
  • ACLS and BLS from the American Heart Association
  • NRP
  • AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring


Experience



  • 3 years direct nursing experience in Labor and Delivery required.
  • 5 years Director experience
