Position Summary The University of New Mexico National Cancer Institute (NCI) Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC), and the Department of Medicine, Divisions of Molecular Medicine and Hematology/Oncology, and the Department of Pathology at the UNM School of Medicine, invite applications from scientists and physicians with expertise in fundamental to translational and translational to clinical research focused on gastrointestinal malignancies. The successful applicant will also provide leadership and scientific expertise UNMCCC Research Program and Multidisciplinary Scientific Group in Gastrointestinal Cancers. The multiethnic populations of New Mexico (primarily Hispanic, American Indian, and Non-Hispanic White) have a very high incidence of cancers of the colon, liver, and gallbladder and are particularly affected by striking disparities in the incidence and mortality of gastrointestinal malignancies, affording many unique research opportunities. The UNMCCC and UNM School of Medicine have an outstanding and highly collaborative cadre of investigators from multiple specialties (GI Medicine, Oncology, Surgery, Pathology, and Laboratory and Population Sciences) focused on developing innovative methods for early detection and screening of these cancers, for cancer behavioral and cancer control interventions to overcome disparities, in discovery-focused laboratory investigations, in translational research using primary human tissue samples and animal model systems, and in clinical research focused on the development of investigator-initiated and early phase clinical trials. Applications are invited from mid-career scientists and physicians (M.D., M.D/Ph.D., or Ph.D.) trained in any oncology relevant specialty with expertise in research relevant to the study of these cancers. Successful applicants will have a sustained track record of research-focused academic accomplishments with peer-reviewed extramural funding (NIH, NCI, or equivalent); expertise in fundamental, translational, or clinical cancer research; and, the ability to develop and lead highly collaborative multidisciplinary research teams. Significant resources, including Endowed Chairs and Professorships, excellent salaries, outstanding laboratory space and research resources, clinical research infrastructure, and comprehensive start-up packages are available.
