Overview

We are currently seeking a Threshold Inspector with design experience involving conventional wood framing, masonry, and concrete to support restoration and rehabilitation construction efforts and structural condition assessment assignments in Florida. Projects typically involve "threshold" buildings (those greater than 3 stories tall or 50 feet in height). This role requires a Florida-certified Special Inspector designation for inspection of "Threshold" buildings or the ability to obtain. The current requirements are having a Professional Engineering License with 3 years of inspection experience and 2 years of design experience in threshold buildings (FBPE.ORG Licensure Process).

Responsibilities

In this position you will apply your technical knowledge to evaluate existing buildings and design solutions for the complex and unique problems of our clients. Projects will include a mix of residential, multi-family, and commercial projects, with an emphasis on repair of damage from fire, wind, flood, and impacts, as well as adaptive reuse of older buildings, and enhancements to existing facilities to accommodate changes in use and implementation of equipment and machinery. Some opportunities for structural design of commercial, retail, industrial, and hospitality structures may also develop. You must be able to manage several projects and teams simultaneously and be detail orientated. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written are critical.

You should have experience with:



  • Both commercial and residential building structural systems and the best materials choices based on the type of design, location, and use of the building.
  • Load calculations, performance criteria, and material/member selection.
  • Preparation of as-built drawings from existing buildings.
  • Performance evaluations of the structural systems in existing, sometimes damaged, buildings.
  • Creating required drawings and specifications using your knowledge of building codes and industry standards.
  • Research building codes (historical and current).
  • Field assessment to include working from ladders, lifts, scaffolds, confined spaces, and rooftops.


Typical Duties Include:



  • Conduct investigations and conditions assessments to determine appropriate repair of damaged and/or poorly performing structural systems.
  • Research the history of buildings and any associated code upgrades that should apply.
  • Complete design assignments related to upgrades, maintenance, and restoration of existing buildings.
  • Manage projects and teams in both new and existing construction in a variety of structural projects, assuring QA/QC in the final product.
  • Manage multiple projects with deadlines, preparing technical condition reports, repair design, bid documents, addenda, change orders, and other construction documentation.
  • Skill at establishing a budget and schedule, communicating with clients (internal and external), and working with a team to complete projects within the budget and schedule constraints established for the project.
  • Ability to initiate, develop, and maintain mutually beneficial client relationships.




    REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, and CERTIFICATIONS:



    • Minimum Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
    • Professional Engineering, P.E. required.
    • Florida certified Special Inspector of Threshold Buildings OR a Special Inspector of Threshold Buildings Limited designation.
    • 4+ years of structural design experience.


    REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES:



    • AutoCAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) proficiency appreciated.
    • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation is a must.
    • Ability to travel in and out of state on assignments (approximately 20%).
    • Good report writing skills with the ability to develop and commit to budgets, scopes, and deadlines.
    • Must be outgoing and able to interact with staff, clients, and home/business owners.
    • Ability to work independently with good judgment and critical thinking skills.
    • Must be able to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.
    • You must possess excellent verbal, communication skills, and technical writing abilities.
    • For required site visits, the physical ability to perform all the following functions is required: Climb ladders, walk on roofs, work from elevated platforms (scaffolding), enter and work in confined spaces, work outdoors in hot or cold weather, lift up to 50 pounds, and use necessary safety equipment.
    • Perform duties that may require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, or squatting for prolonged periods.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS, OVERTIME, and TRAVEL:

    Physical Demands - Work will be performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e., Client's office, industrial, construction, and/or residential sites). The employee is frequently required to stand, walk on slope roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, climb inside attics and crawl under homes and tunnels, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites. Employees may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting site inspections, speaking, and interacting with clients, preparing written reports of findings, and testifying in deposition or trial. Clear vision and depth perception are also necessary.

    Overtime - This position is salaried with exempt FLSA status. There will be periods where extended hours will be required, which the employee will need to comply with to meet the demands of the position.

    • % In field - 40% to 60%


    The Salary Range for this position is $110,000.00 - $150,000.00 and is dependent on education, experience, location, and certifications/licensure.
