Primary Purpose of Position |
The Department of Social Work and Sociology, within the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, is seeking an assistant/associate professor of social work. The primary responsibilities for this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses, conducting research, student advising, student mentoring and recruitment, curriculum development, conducting scholarly activities and all other activities required for tenure. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, engaging in accreditation procedures, program assessment and service to the Department, College and University as needed. The ideal candidate will be expected to: (i) establish and sustain a strong externally-funded research program in their field of expertise; (ii) produce an excellent record of scholarly publications; (iii) incorporate modern pedagogical skills in teaching social work courses to undergraduate and graduate students; (iv) supervise and support dissertation research projects; and (vi) provide service to the department, the college and university as well as to appropriate community and professional organizations. Candidates are expected to work collaboratively with colleagues from Social Work and /or related disciplines. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position. |

The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences (
HCHHS) comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The
HCHHS offers the following undergraduate degree programs: Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology. At the graduate level,
HCHHS offers four graduate degree programs including the masters in Physician Assistant Studies (PA program), Master of Social Work (
MSW), Master of Science in Health Psychology and Ph.D. in Social Work. Three additional doctoral programs being are being developed; Doctor of Nurse practice (
DNP), PhD in Applied Psychology, and PhD in Sociology. The
HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (
CIHDER), a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The
HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic health science programming, and enhance the training of healthcare and social science professionals.
The Department of Social Work and Sociology is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners who prepare students to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Degree options include the Bachelor of Sociology, the Bachelor of Social Work, a Master of Social Work (offered with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and a Ph.D. in Social Work (offered with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro). Both the Bachelor and Masters Social work programs are fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (
CSWE). The Department of Social Work and Sociology has 290 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students. We are committed to research and excellence in education by preparing our students to face complex social problems with knowledge of evidenced based practice and creative solutions. Our curriculum and internships provide learning opportunities that foster leadership to promote the development of social and economic justice through practice and community engaged scholarship. |
Minimum Requirements |
Candidates must have (1) a master of social work degree (from an accredited program), (2) a Ph.D. in social work, (3) at least 2 years of experience teaching in an accredited social work program(s), and (4) an initial record of research and publications. Rank will be determined by the candidate's experience and qualifications. |
