About Us:
Our client is a family-owned business and since 1929, stands as one of New York's most trusted petroleum fuel marketers. Based in Buffalo, they proudly serve Western and Central New York, with a growing presence in Florida and Pennsylvania as well.
Role Overview:
Our client is seeking an experienced Controller to join their team. This role is crucial in maintaining the financial health of the company, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strategic financial management. Working closely with the Vice President and external partners the Controller will oversee financial reporting, cash flow management, and internal controls, contributing directly to our continued success.
Salary: $150,000 base
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Reporting & Analysis:
  • Prepare work papers for annual tax returns and audited financial statements.
  • Oversee the monthly accounting close process, ensuring accurate and timely financial records.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, cash flow reports, and performance metrics.
  • Implement departmental transaction tracking for budget comparisons and profit center analysis
Tax & Compliance:
  • Coordinate with external CPA firms for annual tax returns.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and corporate policies.
  • Maintain and document effective internal controls and processes.
Cash & Investment Management:
  • Perform cash projections to optimize cash flow and maximize returns on excess balances.
  • Manage and record company investments, including funds and securities.
  • Oversee retirement account management (e.g., 401(k) Plan).
Operational Oversight:
  • Supervise accounts payable processes and ensure accurate financial reporting across multiple entities.
  • Coordinate asset management billing, fee calculations, and reimbursements from clients.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and coordinate quarterly inventory reviews.
Human Resources & IT Management:
  • Handle all human resource functions, including payroll processing.
  • Serve as the primary IT contact, coordinating with our managed service provider.
Leadership & Collaboration:
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, ensuring their productivity and growth.
  • Work closely with other departments to implement corporate policies, improve processes, and support business objectives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of financial strategies.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Proven working experience as a Controller or similar role, with a minimum of 5 years of accounting and finance experience
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with creating financial statements, general ledger functions, and the month-end/year-end close process.
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
