The Opportunity

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is now hiring an Irrigation Specialist for the Daytona Beach campus. This position is responsible for installation and maintenance of the campus and other assigned irrigation systems. They are responsible for the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems low voltage controls and the installation, operation, and preventive maintenance on electrical and hydraulic systems components

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Responsible for additions and modifications to existing systems and maintaining an accurate "as built" drawing inventory of all installed systems at all locations.
  • Schedules and implements operations to ensure adequate irrigation of all areas at appropriate times to ensure that sod and landscaped areas are maintained in an acceptable state to University administration and to preclude water damage to University structures and parked vehicles.
  • Analyze and change system components as required, invoking the ability to understand low voltage and hydraulic problems, then recommend and implement solutions.
  • Installation of pressure relief valves to insure safe operations of all systems.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High school (or GED) level ability in spelling, grammar, basic composition, and math.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license and must meet the University's standards for approved drivers. Unacceptable driving records (as stated in the Use of Equipment and Vehicles Procedure 1.17) include the following (for three years from the date of each occurrence):
    • More than 3 moving violations and/or accidents in 3 years
    • More than 2 moving violations and/or accidents in any 1 year
    • A major conviction in the last 3 years, including (but not limited to) driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and/or homicide or assault by motor vehicle.

Required skills, knowledge, abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of irrigation loop system.
  • Ability to install and maintain low voltage controls and understand their operation.
  • Knowledge of both conventional and 2-wire irrigation systems
  • Ability to comprehend basic instructions and to respond effectively.
    • Such as irrigation maps & blueprints
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry miscellaneous grounds/irrigation equipment or supplies short distances and to push or pull a hand cart. Eye-hand coordination is essential for proper operation of power tools and other work associated with irrigation work.
  • Employee must take necessary precautions due to the nature of the equipment they are working on and the outside elements subjected to, to protect self and others from the hazards associated with this type of work.
  • Must be prepared to work nights and weekends and be trained by the Irrigation Crew Leader and Supervisor in the proper operation and maintenance of the irrigation system.
