Summary: Under the general supervision of the Professional Nurse provides direct patient care to the surgical patient. Assists the surgical team with/by positioning patients scrubbing preparing and cleaning instruments and restocking of supplies. Maintains patient confidentiality. Fosters patient and family centered care in accordance with the Brown University Health mission vision and values and the philosophy of nursing at The Miriam Hospital and with consideration of the life span including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns Responsibilities: Prepares operating room in a timely manner with all anticipated supplies instruments and equipment. Scrubs on a variety of surgical procedures; anticipates surgeon needs passes instruments sponges and sutures occasionally assists in suctioning holding retractors and cutting sutures. Maintains strict aseptic technique and a safe environment for patients and staff. Checks all equipment and instruments for proper functioning prior to each procedure. Demonstrates competence in care of specimens; follows procedure for care and handling of specimens. Accurately performs surgical counts according to policy and procedure; is aware of numbers and kinds of packs/sponges/instruments etc. in a surgical site. Maintains an orderly sterile instrument table according to hospital standard to facilitate efficiency. Assists in positioning of patients according to department procedure. Cleans and prepares room between cases and after the last case; restocks as needed. Cleans and prepares instruments and equipment for sterilization. Keep accurate account of medications and solutions used during a procedure. May transport patients to and from the patient units operating room and PACUs. Participates in hospital/department quality improvement activities. Perform other related duties as required. Performs all essential functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of the geriatric adult and adolescent patient. Other information: BASIC KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED is required
- Completion of at least one of the following options is required:
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or
- Graduate of a surgical technologist associate degree program or
- Current certification as a CST or
- Current NCCT-TC (tech in surgery) certification (for applicants with past military experience only; military experience as a surgical technologist will be strongly considered) or
- 3 years of experience within the past 5 years as a surgical technologist
- Successful completion of a Brown University Health on-the-job surgical technologist training program
- Current BLS Certification is required upon hire
