DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

The Senior Director, Health System Finance & Controller ("Health System Controller") serves as the Senior Accounting Officer of MU Health Care and is responsible for oversight of the General Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Payroll departments.

Develops, recommends, interprets, and implements policies and procedures affecting general accounting, financial reporting, receivable valuation, fixed assets, inventory valuation, internal controls, and auditing.

The position is accountable for the preparation of financial statements, supporting schedules, and reconciliations and has overall responsibility to maintain financial records and procedures to safeguard the assets of the Health System.

Provides strategic guidance to executives, physicians, and staff through financial analyses and reporting and participates in the development and deployment of critical financial initiatives across the Health System, giving leadership guidance on scope, budget, quality, and work effort as well as any issue resolution needed.

Serves as a primary contact for external auditors and completes month-end and annual financial statements in collaboration with the University of Missouri System Controller's Office.

Understands and interprets generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and applies those principles to the Health System accounting processes.

Establishes and implements formal MU Healthcare policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure the integrity of all financial data in the general ledger in alignment with UM System policies and procedures.

Completes the monthly and annual closing process and tracks financial performance in accordance with established standards.

In consultation with the UM System Controller, oversees in-house or outsourced tax reporting as deemed appropriate for any MU Health Care affiliated organizations.

Oversees the development, coordination, and maintenance of daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of coverage.

Directs the implementation and oversight of MU Health Care time and attendance policies and practices.

Strong management skills for achieving the accounting department goals for financial reporting and significant related workflows.

Ability to present technical accounting information to healthcare leadership and staff in an understandable manner.

Ability to read, interpret, and apply GAAP, including Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Committee of Sponsoring Organizations (COSO), State Regulations, and Federal Uniform Guidance.

Ability to manage relationships with external auditors and issue financial statements in compliance with GAAP and internal control requirements.

Ability to perform highly complex analyses and interpretations.

Flexibility to work in a diverse group with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Desire to optimize and evaluate for continual process improvement. A leadership presence and style that facilitates team and organizational development.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field.

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) by the Missouri Board of Accountancy or another state board (active or inactive).

Three (3) years of relevant healthcare leadership experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field.

External audit background with public accounting experience.
