BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Skilled work on a journey level involving the installation, maintenance, service, and repair of a wide range of locking mechanisms, door closers and exit devices; and in the fabrication, issuance and accountability for keys for such equipment. All work is subject to spot checking and inspection for conformance to specifications and accepted standards of the trade.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Install, maintain, repair, reset and/or replace all types of locking mechanisms.

Install, maintain, adjust, repair and/or rebuild all types of door closers.

Make new keys from duplicate pattern keys on manually and automatically operated key cutting machines; make keys manually from codes, by observing pin settings in locking devices and by impression methods.

May issue and receive keys.

Maintain necessary lists, card files, receipts and other records to account for combination locking devices.

As directed by proper authority, open locks for which no key is available, utilizing prescribed lock-picking procedures and lock-picking tools.

May maintain and repair coin vending devices serviced by the university.

May lock and unlock various rooms and offices as assigned.

May perform or assist in performance of any of the following: preparation of cost estimates, preparation of material orders, maintenance of records and preparation of reports.

Observe and enforce all safety requirements related to equipment operation.

Due to necessary fluctuation of workloads in the skill area, an incumbent in this class may be required, on an occasional basis and according to need, to perform duties outside his/her trade area. Normal safety requirements, scheduling and the most efficient use of staff and equipment are taken into consideration in such assignments.

Clean, maintain, safely operation and properly store all tools and equipment.

Perform related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Direct supervision is received from a designated supervisor. Oral and written instructions are supplemented by plans, drawings or blueprints.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May instruct and/or guide personnel assisting in work.

QUALIFICATIONS

A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired is necessary.

Four years actual work experience and training, including the equivalent of apprenticeship or vocational training, in the trade.

Ability to read blueprints, plans, and drawings.

Skill in maintenance and use of tools, equipment and materials of applicable trade.

A person working in this classification will need on a daily basis, to be able to:

- Grasp, lift, maneuver, rotate, and otherwise use small to large trades tools and equipment.

- Grasp, lift, carry, and set down heavy (50-80 lbs) objects.

- Grasp, turn, twist, pull, push, lift, and otherwise move equipment, controls, parts, etc.

- Visually assess maintenance, construction and repair needs.

- Climb and work from ladders, stairs, and scaffolding.

A valid driver's license may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.[1]
