JOB SUMMARY:

Verifies patient demographics, insurance information, pre-certifies admissions/procedures and communicates with patient/physician offices/hospital regarding patient verification/pre-certification. When necessary, patients are contacted to update demographic information and insurance information for their care.

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Perform complex/multiple clerical support functions within emergency services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Verify eligibility for insurance benefits with payor/insurance company on a timely basis. Submit Emergency Department Notice of Admissions critical in securing payment for the encounter (VA patients). Process high volume of acutely ill patients in poor condition with constant patient turnover. Accurately identify patients in highly acute conditions in order to protect patient safety and prevent medical record duplicates through best practice registration processes and policies. Execute disaster preparedness protocols and policies related to high volume of unidentified patients in emergency mass influx events. Keep abreast of regulatory agency requirements specific to the Emergency Room department as well as inpatients to the health system. Possess knowledge of level of cares to assess what patient types can be transferred back to the Emergency room in acute scenarios preventing duplicate encounters. Screen uninsured patients' eligibility for Medicaid expansion. Prioritize multiple tasks within short period of time; for example, trauma arrivals and communications with EMS; strong collaboration skills required to work in a multi-disciplinary environment. Perform bedside registration process between ED PSR and patient/family; ensures obtaining verification so accurate insurance benefits are applied for each patient. Communicate with patient families experiencing emotional events while providing support and acting as a liaison between clinical staff and families regarding patient needs. Resolve volume of technical errors and issues that impede patient care; must be able to independently make correct decisions to ensure proper patient care occurs. Adapt to an unpredictable environment and deescalate agitated and sometimes aggressive patients in a professional manner, display empathy to patients in a professional manner. Responsible for reporting to work in timely manner for all scheduled shifts. May complete unit/department specific duties and expectations as outlined in department documents

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities can be acquired. Six (6) months of experience with frontline customer service and guest relations duties and skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior experience in a health care setting, hospital admissions, registration, medical office, and use of medical terminology strongly preferred. Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. This position is very active and may require ambulating, remaining in a stationary position and positioning self to reach and/or move objects above the shoulders and below the knees. The employee may frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 lbs. and occasionally move objects up to 25 lbs. This role may also routinely come into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
