Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Museum Maintainer will perform preventative maintenance and service of all heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, including system components related to HVAC, such as pneumatic systems, pumps, compressors, cooling towers (belts, bearings, valves, float switches and other related equipment components), chillers and all components of the chilled water and condenser water distribution piping systems. They also perform preventative maintenance and service of steam system (including condensate) piping and components, which includes the repair of disabled equipment and associated components and replacement of existing equipment.
The Museum Maintainer will be part of a 24/7 operation, responsible for continuous rounds through the physical plant and campus; documentation of temperature, humidity and pressure readings vital to the environmental conditions required by the science collections storerooms, exhibition halls and public spaces throughout the Museum; as well as the sprinkler and standpipe systems through both physical inspection as well as through the computerized Building Management System. The position responds to all HVAC emergencies and other emergencies as required.

The expected salary for the Museum Maintainer/ HVAC Technician is $79,486.70/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid NYC Fire Department Refrigeration Operator's License.
  • The following additional NYC Fire Department Certificates of Fitness must be held, but can be obtained within 6 months of start of employment and must be maintained throughout employment:

    • a. F-60 Fire Guard for Torch Operations & Construction site;
    • b. G-60 Torch use of Flammable Gases;
    • c. A-35 Operate and Maintain Air Compressors,
    • d. S-12 City wide sprinkler Systems;
    • e. S-13 City wide Standpipe Systems.
    • The Certificate numbers may be changed by the NYFD but employees must remain current and maintain these certificates or their replacements at all times.



  • Three years of experience in relevant maintenance work or equivalent.
  • One year of experience with centrifugal chillers and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC controls.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring physical strength and high manual dexterity sufficient for the duties above.
  • Must work well with others and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical, trade or vocational education.


Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties

    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:

      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
