Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Department/Office Mission:
The Student Support Services ( SSS) Classic and STEM-H programs are federally funded TRIO-grants designed to maximize academic performance for UNCG students who are from first-generation low-income backgrounds, or who have a disability, and who also demonstrate academic need for services.
Job Description-Reporting:
The Graduate Assistant for TRIO Programs is intended to be a two-year assistantship and reports directly to the Director of TRIO Programs.

Job Description-Job Duties and/or Responsibilities:
The TRIO Program Graduate Assistant (GA) works closely with the TRIO Staff to guide academics, transitioning to UNCG, and graduate school or career planning. The GA will develop programming and activities to help students develop their knowledge and skills in planning for their futures. They will work with TRIO students individually and in group sessions to achieve these goals.
Responsibilities:
The Graduate Assistant experience will include direct responsibilities and active involvement in the development, delivery, and support of programs and services within the 2 TRIO Programs. This assistantship opportunity will offer graduate students outstanding, hands-on experience program planning and training implementation, student development, as well as administrative skills.

  • Create and update activities, handouts, and programming related to TRIO student activities such as graduate school exploration and application; career exploration and preparation; financial literacy, wellness and cultural competency, etc.
  • Provide programming support for TRIO events, workshops and activities.
  • Respond to Starfish alerts to address students' academic and personal concerns
  • Work closely with the Assistant Directors to train and manage Peer Success Coaches and Tutoring Program such as provide in-service meetings with student staff.
  • Design and facilitate trainings and workshops for Peer Success Coaches (mentors) to lead group sessions.
  • Attend staff meetings and record minutes
  • Complete other duties associated with the TRIO Program as assigned.


Work Hours, Environment:
The UNCG Graduate Assistant Work Schedule is the basis for determining the work schedule. Graduate Assistant typically work 20 hours/week, during office hours, which are generally Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. but can include evening hours for student programming. The TRIO Director will work with the graduate assistant to accommodate their academic course schedule. Vacation and travel requests during the academic year should be discussed prior to finalizing plans (example: booking a flight, etc).
Required Skills or Prerequisites:
This position includes student contact and requires an individual who demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by first-generation, low-income and underrepresented students in higher education.
  • Academic counseling/coaching experience (or desire to gain experience in this area).
  • Ability to interact with faculty, staff, undergraduate, and graduate students in a professional and personable manner
  • Effective time management and recordkeeping skills
  • Excellent communication skills, particularly small group presentations with students, staff and faculty; that convey professionalism and respect in both written and oral forms
  • Demonstrated ability to build professional rapport, particularly with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong decision-making skills and comfort with translating knowledge and experience to new situations is strongly desired
  • A general proficiency with various social media platforms, presentation software, Canva and Microsoft excel; and/or the ability to learn and adapt to new technology platforms quickly. Experience with posting original content on social media platforms is preferred.
  • Candidates who are alumni of TRIO programs or have experience working with first-generation, Pell-eligible student populations from diverse backgrounds are strongly preferred.

Stipend:
$12,000 for the academic year. The stipend amount and hours per week allotted for this position are contingent on budget continuity for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which is subject to change based on UNC System guidelines. If summer assistantship work is agreed, an additional stipend will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
