Job Summary
The Agriculture Experiment Station is seeking applicants for an Agriculture Technician. The individual selected for this position will perform basic level farm and technical research tasks related to beef cattle at the E. V. Smith Research Center located in Shorter, AL.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • General farm and cattle duties.
  • Performing day-to-day animal husbandry tasks such as providing food and water.
  • Cleaning animal enclosures and facilities.
  • Assisting with breeding procedures, and maintaining proper research data.
  • Observing animals, as well as identifying and reporting concerns about their health status or well being.
  • Performing general maintenance on equipment, buildings, and fences.
  • Operating equipment such as tractors, feed mixers, fence sprayers, etc.


Duties are often required to be performed in inclement weather in all seasons and occasionally on holidays and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Level I: High school diploma or equivalent.
Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of experience in farming practices .
Level III: High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in farming practices.
Level IV: High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 years of experience in farming practices.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications


Minimum Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of farm equipment and safety.
Ability to count and use measuring equipment accurately.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated technical excellence; and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Must be willing to work in inclement weather in all seasons and occasionally after hours and on holidays and weekends.

Minimum License and Certifications
A valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection is required.
