Under the general direction of the Director of Marine Terminal Security, supervises and performs work to provide physical security, safety and maintenance of order, in accordance with agency orders and procedures for both the Staten Island Ferry and Private Ferry Landings. Apprises and updates management, vessels and facilities regarding potential threats or other information relevant to security. Oversees private security contractors in performance of duties. Uses computers and operates electronic security and safety monitoring systems and other equipment and devices; performs related duties.
EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS: Monitors contract compliance by private security contractors at both the St. George and Whitehall Ferry terminals. Ensures that private security contractors fully understand and implement all security post orders and directives in accordance with established procedures. Investigates all security related incidents and prepares related reports. Prepares daily inspection reports regarding security activities. Monitors facility sites to ensure compliance with USCG-approved Combined Security Plan. Performs continuous patrolling of assigned facility area to ensure facility remains secured. Discourages and ejects loiterers and disorderly persons. Assist on-site NYPD officers, as requested, in law enforcement, security and crowd control. As required, provides assistance to the sick, injured, mentally and physically disabled, and calls for emergency assistance, ambulance and/or medical attention when necessary. Performs security equipment checks, including but not limited to, cameras and related equipment, vehicle barriers and arm gates to ensure that such equipment is properly working. Train private security contractors in basic knowledge of Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA). Ensures communication and cooperation between Ferry Terminal staff and on-site NYPD officers. May operate a motor vehicle to perform duties.

Additional Information: LICENSE REQUIREMENT: For appointments in DOT, a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York is required, and must be must be maintained for the duration of employment.
PSYCHOLOGICAL, MEDICAL & DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT: Candidates will be required to undergo and pass a psychological, medical and drug screening prior to appointment. Candidates must also complete and pass an Investigation Before Appointment (IBA).
TWIC REQUIREMENT: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. Minimum Qualifications A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a state's department of education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of fulltime satisfactory experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security. Individuals serving in this title are designated as Peace Officers by the New York State Criminal Procedure Law. Therefore, all candidates must be qualified to serve as Peace Officers. Incumbents must satisfy the training requirements established by the State of New York for Peace Officers and obtain certification. Once obtained, this certification must be maintained for the duration of employment. For Assignment To Assignment Level II: A. One year of experience as a Supervising Special Officer-Assignment Level I; or B. In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I above, one year of experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security in a supervisory capacity. For Assignment to Assignment Level III: A. Two years of experience as a Supervising Special Officer; or B. In addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I above, two additional years of full-time experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory or administrative capacity.
