The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated bioinformatician to join our innovative research team at the Center for Precision Medicine and Genomics (CPMG). Our mission is to revolutionize healthcare through the integration of personalized medicine into clinical practice. We collaborate closely with clinicians, research scientists, and genetic counselors to drive groundbreaking research and translate genomic discoveries into improved patient outcomes.

The ideal candidate will be a skilled bioinformatician with a passion for leveraging genomic data to address complex biomedical challenges. You will contribute to a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment and collaborate with researchers from Columbia University and beyond on a variety of national and international projects. This position offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on the field of precision medicine.

Responsibilities




  • Bioinformatics Analysis (40%): Provide comprehensive bioinformatics support for genomic data analysis, including sequence analysis, pipeline optimization, and data management. Utilize both cloud-based and on-premise computational resources (e.g., exome, genome, RNAseq). Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient data access, analysis, and interpretation.

  • Communication and Dissemination (20%): Effectively communicate complex bioinformatics findings to both technical and non-technical audiences through presentations, reports, and publications. Collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds to translate bioinformatics insights into actionable knowledge.

  • Workflow Development (20%): Design, develop, and optimize bioinformatics workflows and pipelines to efficiently process and analyze large-scale genomic datasets. Explore innovative approaches to data visualization, exploration, and mining.

  • Mentorship and Collaboration (20%): Mentor junior team members, including students and post-docs, in bioinformatics techniques and research methodologies. Collaborate with researchers across disciplines to drive successful research projects and grant applications.
  • Perform additional related duties and responsibilities as needed.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field with at least four years of relevant experience.
  • Master's or Doctoral degree in related field would substitute for experience.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as R, Python, and Bash.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's or PhD degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field with at least two years of relevant experience.
  • Expertise in workflow management tools (e.g., CWL, Nextflow, WDL) and cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical and machine learning techniques.


Other Requirements



  • Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements.
