The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Position Summary Columbia University recently combined its Title IX, Gender-Based Misconduct, Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA), and Office of the Protection of Minors teams into one centralized office. These offices are supervised by the Vice Provost for EOAA. Through the applicable policies and procedures for faculty, staff and students, the University provides the means to address discrimination, harassment, sexual and related misconduct, including gender-based harassment, sexual harassment, sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, stalking and sexual exploitation. These offices are responsible for ensuring compliance under these policies and with federal, state and local laws regarding Title VI, Title VII and Title IX. Reporting to the Director of Training and Education, the Associate Director of Training and Education develops and administers policy compliance and prevention training for students, faculty, staff, administrators and other relevant audiences on protected class discrimination and harassment, retaliation, sex-based harassment, sexual misconduct, stalking, domestic and dating violence, equal opportunity and affirmative action policies and procedures, and applicable federal, state and local laws, with a particular focus on protected class discrimination and harassment. Responsibilities
- Serving as a Title VI subject-matter expert within the Office's Training and Education function.
- Perform legal research and provide recommendations based on the legal principles involved.
- Communicate and clarify policies and procedures to a broad range of University constituents, including students, faculty, staff, and administrators, with a particular emphasis on policies and procedures relating to protected classes.
- Creating new training materials and updating existing materials to ensure that they are fresh, engaging, and up to date with applicable policy and law.
- Working strategically and collaboratively with University constituents, including students, faculty, staff, and administrators to develop and administer trainings that meet the needs of those constituents, under the supervision of the Director of Training and Education.
- Working strategically and collaboratively with colleagues within the Office and the broader University community to develop and administer joint trainings where appropriate, under the supervision of the Director of Training and Education.
- Working closely with the Office's investigators and case managers to maintain accurate and thorough files and reports using data/case management software and assess the appropriateness of different conflict resolution modalities for cases that arise.
- Contributing to the Office's Annual Report, outlining Title VI accomplishments and goals.
- Administer the Alternative Resolution process, including conducting mediations, restorative interventions, and facilitating conversations related to protected class and/or bullying.
The types of trainings to be developed and administered by this position include, but are not limited to:
- Discrimination and Harassment training for students, faculty, staff and administrators.
- General overviews of Columbia University's applicable policies and procedures on discrimination, discriminatory harassment and Title IX misconduct.
- Individual trainings to address University policy violations.
- Other trainings to support the work of the Office assigned (e.g., Title IX training, investigations training).
Engage and support University constituents around the Office's work and mission. This includes:
- Providing compliance support through education, resources, outreach, and assistance to the Columbia community.
- Creating and updating informational materials such as webpages, fact sheets, informational flyers, and newsletters to complement training and compliance efforts and to keep the campus community informed of the Office's policies and procedures.
- Identifying and developing initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Training and Education to address specific areas of the Office's compliance, including policies and procedures on discrimination and harassment, with a particular focus on protected class discrimination and harassment.
- Creating enhanced awareness of regulatory requirements and ensuring adequate training resources are available to comply with the requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
- JD required. Minimum of three to five years of relevant experience.
- Ability to work with confidential information in a discreet and professional manner.
- Must be self-directed with effective interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Must have strong analytical and project management skills.
- Ability to prioritize and respond to requests in a timely and knowledgeable manner.
- Requires the flexibility and adaptability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are critical.
- Proven experience in working collaboratively and effectively with varied constituencies.
- Demonstrated skill in tracking and maintaining data and developing reports, including a strong working knowledge of tools for managing and presenting data.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and Google's G Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Gmail).
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to conduct legal research and writing; demonstrated knowledge of Title VI; experience providing trainings and/or presentations to faculty and staff; knowledge of and interest in facilitating community building and conflict resolution practices, such as mediation, restorative circles, restorative conferences, and intergroup dialogue.
