Job Description

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse provides psychiatric evaluations, including Baker Act necessity, and management of patients in the Behavioral Health Unit, Behavioral Medicine Unit of the Baptist Hospital Emergency, and Department and Baptist Hospital under the direction and responsibility of a supervising physician. The Psychiatric (APRN) will also provide in-house, after-hours psychiatric services to patients hospitalized in Baptist Behavioral Medicine Center, including completing psychiatric evaluations, educating patients and obtaining express and informed consent to prescribe psychotropic medications when appropriate. Orders and interprets pertinent tests for psychiatric assessment within their scope of practice and skillset, including labs, diagnostic studies and EKG's. Works closely with physicians and other clinicians in a team approach to patient care. APRN will practice in collaboration with on-call psychiatrists as well as under the supervision of the Medical Director. This position maintains health records in accordance with protocols set forth by BHI.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patient status by obtaining health history through interviews and chart reviews; assessing presenting illness, risk factors, and family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors; and performing appropriate examination.
  • Orders or performs appropriate laboratory diagnostic and other screening tests. Seeks other information as needed, including consultation with physicians for evaluation of illness. Integrates data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan, including identification of any health risks.
  • Develops and implements treatment plan by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws.
  • Instructs and counsels patients regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance.
  • Participates in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures. Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care.
  • Collaborates with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patient. Provides monitoring and continuity of care between visits according to treatment plan including triaging patient calls/e-mails.
  • Maintains health records in accordance with protocols set forth by BHI.
  • Maintains current knowledge/certification/licensure. Pursues professional growth and development.
  • Documents and reports psychiatric services and activities within designated time frames.


Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Master's Degree Nursing Required.

Minimum Work Experience

  • 2 years Experience as a psychiatric APRN Required.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Licensed State of Florida Upon Hire Required.
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers (BLS) American Heart Association Upon Hire Required.
  • Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health NP (APMH_ANCC) Upon Hire Required.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of advanced practice of nursing including anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and therapeutics, basic nutrition, behavioral factors, psychosocial/family systems, diagnostic testing, interpretation of results and clinical decision making, alternative treatment modalities.
  • Using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
  • Strong analytical and decision making skills.
  • Ability to accurately screen and triage acute patients
  • Skill in usage of medical diagnostic equipment, as well as working knowledge of instruments and supplies required to perform clinical procedures and physical examinations.
  • Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel and Access), database management, and electronic medical records systems and document preparation.
  • Knowledge of insurance and medical terminology, coding, collections, and federal / state laws governing medical compliance.
  • Ability to document and utilize electronic health record applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills.
