Job Details:

Purpose

Contribute to research and development tasks within the Environmental Sciences Laboratory (ESL).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on the geotechnical and geophysical perspectives of cable routing and/or fisheries regarding offshore construction to support a variety of subsea cable projects. Support collaborative research efforts with other team members. Supervision of junior personnel (may include student employees).

  • Research, compile, and interpret published literature, publicly available GIS datasets, and project-specific data to inform Critical Issues Analyses and Desktop Study documentation.

  • Research and interpret international, federal, state, and local regulations on a project-specific basis to assess project permitting feasibility and development requirements as well as prepare environmental reports.

  • Compile and analyze geophysical and geotechnical data to evaluate and assess cable burial potential and highlight other potential construction risks.

  • Design and update subsea cable routes to client specifications and following industry best practices using GIS and cable planning tools (e.g., ArcMap, AutoCAD & Makai Plan)

  • Occasional travel for presentation of analysis results at internal and external working group meetings, or offshore support.

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • B.S. in Earth Science, Geology, Geophysics, Marine Science, or related degree required.

  • Three or more years of experience with one or more of the following: Submarine cable projects - installation; Oceanographic or Geophysical surveys; Offshore development; or Marine or coastal planning and design

  • Strong GIS skills and understanding of geospatial analysis, integration, and data management. (ArcGIS, QGIS)

  • Strong interpersonal and public speaking skills.

  • Attention to detail, effective problem solving, sound engineering judgment, good communication skills, and the ability to use time effectively in order to meet deadlines.

U.S. citizen. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information at level appropriate to project requirements of the position.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Engineering, Geology, Oceanography, Marine Sciences, Geophysics, or related degree field.

  • Current or recent eligibility for access to classified information.

  • Two or more years of experience with one of more of the following: Geology; Oceanography; Ocean Mapping/ Geophysics; Pipeline route design; Marine project permitting

  • Two or more years of experience with programming and data analysis using MATLAB or Python.

  • Experience working in both Windows and Linux environments.

  • Experience summarizing and/or presenting analysis results using Microsoft Powerpoint or Word.

  • Proven ability to work independently, formulate research plans, take initiative, and mentor other staff.

  • Project management experience.

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 of greater with a 3.5 or greater in major coursework.

Salary Range

$104,000-$174,000+/negotiable depending on qualifications.
