BASIC PURPOSE

The Program Aide is responsible for providing safe and developmentally appropriate before and after school programs for youth along with Day Camp in the summer. The Program Aide is responsible for the safety, care and supervision of children participating in morning latch key program and after school homework assistance, tutoring, creative arts and recreational activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Implementation of the After School Program in accordance with the objectives, policies, and philosophies of The Salvation Army, and in compliance with Title 22 regulations.
  • Provides constant supervision of children while involved in Salvation Army programs.
  • Assist with implementation of lesson plans (content areas: science, math, language, art, physical education).
  • Assist program participants with homework, reading, creative arts and recreational activities.
  • Treat each child with dignity and respect with special interest in enhancing each child's self-esteem.
  • Help facilitate active indoor and outdoor games and learning activities.
  • Share responsibility for the classroom as a learning environment including arrangement, appearance, neatness, etc., as well as necessary housekeeping duties.
  • Assist with the opening and closing recreational facilities; monitor facility use; prepare and set up facilities for use.
  • Attend all staff meetings and participates in conferences and other programs conducive to professional growth.
  • Assist with maintaining records on daily attendance and snack counts.
  • Sanitize or clean-up all indoor/outdoor spaces and equipment, including set-up and dismantling equipment such as tables and chairs.
  • Help maintain a clean and safe environment through minor custodial duties e.g. picking up trash, sweeping, mopping, etc.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned by superiors.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS



  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Two years of experience working with youth in a related environment or field preferred.
  • Must possess an enthusiasm for children and youth, and a zeal and vision for youth ministry which is in agreement with the overall philosophy and goals of The Salvation Army.
  • General office skills required (computer skills, reading, proof-reading, typing, filing, correct spelling and grammar usage, use of telephone).
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Must have ability to work with supervisors such as Office Coordinator, Corps Officers, and work well as a team alongside co-workers, community members, and guests/clients.
  • Able to function in fast-paced, frequently changing environment.
  • Must have the ability to work with people of diversity.
  • Competent in Microsoft Word, Publisher and Excel
  • Must pass a criminal background check and required certification for The Salvation Army's "Protecting The Mission" child safety program.
  • Must have or get current pediatric CPR and First Aid Cards.
  • Have or willingness to get Class C license for transportation of children is preferred.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to operate under stressful working conditions in a rapidly changing work environment with multiple priorities is required. Ability to physically interact with children including reaching, stooping, kneeling, handling objects and moving or lifting objects up to 40 pounds. Some travel may be required.

Must be able to fill in for jobs when staff members are absent, which may require the employee to stand for up to 2 hours or more at a time; must be able to walk, run, crouch, stoop, reach and grasp with hands and arms.

  1. Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis

  3. Ability to reach overhead
  4. Ability to operate telephone
  5. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. for administrative positions

  1. Ability to lift up to 50-70 lbs. for positions that require lifting
  2. Ability to operate a computer
  3. Ability to process written, visual, and/or verbal information
  4. Ability to operate basic office equipment and tools PC, Fax Machine, Telephone, Calculator, Copier, Printer.
