A. BASIC PURPOSE

The Program Aide position is responsible for assisting leaders and staff in providing safe and developmentally appropriate programs

for youth and adults.

The Program Aide interacts directly with members of the Summer

Day Camp, as well as other departments including the Community Center, youth, Corps programs and church related activities or events as needed.

The Program Aide is responsible for the safety, care and well-being of children and adults in participating in various activities. This position also serves to work as a mentor, coach, and tutor youth in the programs. This may include but not limited to leading, assisting programs, or playing alongside program participants..



B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Must relate to children in a manner which contributes to their personal
  2. Competently prevent and deal with discipline
  3. Assist in planning and delivering lesson plans (content areas: science, math, language, art, physical education).
  4. Plan and conduct an educational "circle"
  5. Organize active indoor and outdoor games and learning
  6. Work cooperatively with staff and
  7. Supervise children in independent activities and prevent exposure to safety
  8. In the absence of the Program Lead, assume leadership role in leading lessons, activities, recreational activities
  9. Provides constant supervision of children while involved in The Salvation Army
  10. Serve as a homework coach and mentor to children, whether helping with math, science, reading or other subjects, leading programs or playing alongside, and must demonstrate a true desire to work and play with
  11. Perform any other task deemed necessary by the teacher and/or center coordinator/supervisor
  12. Adhere to The Salvation Army's "Protecting the Mission Policy for Work with Minors".
  13. Sit with children during all mealtimes and eat the same "Type A" snack as the children to provide a model for good nutritional habits (unless modified meals are prescribed by a physician's statement).



Other Duties


  1. Participate in Day Camp activities including lesson plans, electives, recreational activities
  2. Work in cooperation with all staff to meet the needs of the
  3. Assists with programs in assigned
  4. Assists participants individually or in groups, with program
  5. Responsible for overall set up and cleanup of
  6. Open and close recreational facilities; monitor facility use; prepare and set up facilities for
  7. Assist supervisors in the implementation of Youth Programs in accordance with the objectives, policies and philosophies of The Salvation
  8. Helps maintain a clean and safe environment through minor custodial duties (such as picking up trash, sweeping, mopping, etc.). Sanitize or clean-up any indoor/outdoor messes; including set- up and dismantling equipment (such as tables and chairs).
  9. Assist with office duties as called upon; including but not limited to, clerical tasks such as answering phone calls, organizing paperwork, or attending to the public and helping them with their needs.
  10. Adheres to the scheduled hours assigned by the center director/supervisor; includes attending and participating in in-service trainings and weekly
  11. Fill-in as a kitchen helper-prepping snack or other meals including cleaning-up afterwards. Assisting and leading snack counts, numbers, head of kitchen and
  12. Help each participant to become aware of his/her role and responsibility as an individual member of
  13. Attend all Departmental and Campus-Wide staff meetings, training sessions and orientation as scheduled.

  15. Assist in any Christmas related activities, events or programs such as bell ringing but may also include filing and organization of paperwork or any other Christmas related
  16. Must be flexible and available to work on weekends if
  17. Perform other job duties as assigned to



C. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
1. Education Requirements

Must be enrolled and attending high school or an equivalency, must have 120 hours of verifiable work with children or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work both independently and as a team member. Ability to motivate participants. Ability to follow directions and carry out assigned work. Previous experience working with children.



2. Skills

Must be able to work with little to no supervision. Should be creative, self-motivated, organized, flexible, possess good people skills, and have the ability to interact successfully with the children in our care. Have knowledge of basic first aid and CPR knowledge (certification preferred).



D. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform the essential duties with or without
  2. Must have uninhibited physical mobility in bending, jumping and lifting up to 30 pounds, be capable of auditory and visual oversight of the children and staff, and be able to verbally interact with the children and staff. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust
  3. Must be in good physical and mental health in order to meet the demands imposed by a strict schedule.
