ANML HEALTH TCHN 3 (Center for Advanced Veterinary Surgery Floater Technician)

Under the direction of the Center for Advanced Veterinary Surgery (CAVS) supervisor and Service Chiefs, provide technical support to the CAVS Surgical and Anesthesia services. This position will float between CAVS and the VMTH depending on service needs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to OR circulation, surgical preparation for various procedures, anesthesia induction, anesthesia monitoring and recovery, patient treatments, diagnostic sample collection and performing technical skills such as patient restraint, IV catheter placement, blood draws, bandaging, and positioning and obtaining radiographs. Responsible for patient transport between CAVS and VMTH. Work cooperatively with others to foster strong team commitments towards achieving surgery services objectives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Must possess a valid California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
• Must possess a valid California drivers license.
• Experience in prioritizing and organizing workload without direct supervision.
• Experience placing and maintaining various types of catheters.
• Experience in aseptic technique and circulation in an O.R.
• Experience inducing and monitoring anesthesia.
• Experience communicating orally and in writing with a diverse group of people.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the use of various specialized surgical and diagnostic equipment.
• Experience to recognize normal and abnormal parameters for patients and how to respond accordingly.
• Interpersonal and communication skills to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.

Physical Demands

• Stand, bend, kneel, squat, reach above shoulder level and move about on hard surfaces up to 8 or 10 hours each day.
• Ability to acutely discern heart and lung sounds using a stethoscope.
• Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
• Ability to transport patients in carriers, on leashes, on gurneys and move patients on and off gurneys and in and out of cages.
• May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

Work Environment

• Work occasional overtime and various hours on short notice (including covering staff shortages, weekend and holiday shifts).
• Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
• This position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System
• Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
• May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
• Work in other related areas on an as needed basis
