Job Summary
The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a TES Vet Lab Animal Assistant to perform a variety of tasks related to the veterinary care of animals under the auspices of the animal resource program.

Temporary Employment Services ( TES), a unit of the Auburn University Department of Human Resources, is an in-house support center established to meet the temporary employment needs of the university. TES provides qualified and dedicated temporary employees in a wide variety of occupations to meet the staffing needs throughout the campus. Temporary employees are hired for a variety of reasons with the most common being:

  • Assistance in the place of a regular employee who is absent for a specified period of time
  • Additional assistance during periods of abnormal or peak workloads
  • Assistance with special projects
  • Seasonal work
  • Emergencies

Essential Functions

  • Husbandry tasks (i.e. clean assigned cat rooms).
  • Maintain cleanliness of common work area by sweeping/mopping regularly.
  • Operating cage washer to maintain cleanliness of animal care supplies.
  • Launder linens and work wear.
  • Stocking animal care supplies (i.e. litter, various foods, and medical/cleaning supplies).
  • Assist in maintaining animal health records.
  • Assist with feline neonatal care.
  • Perform daily animal checks, and administer oral/injectable medications at assigned time points.
  • Assist with various animal procedures which include but not limited to proper animal restraint techniques, physical examinations, blood collections, catheter placements, specimen collections, and vaccinations.
  • Assist in preparing areas for procedures/surgeries, and clean area afterwards.
  • Prepare and maintain surgical packs.
  • Surgical support experience with knowledge of performing anesthesia.
  • Collect research data as requested by investigators.
  • Assist in training new colony husbandry workers.
  • Knowledge of animal anatomy to assist with animal tissue collections.
  • Diagnose disease status in animals using PCR and/or enzyme activity.
  • Process blood samples for storage/analysis.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree in related field.


  • Must be able to follow detailed, simple, routine instructions and procedures.
  • Duties require basic physical and mental skills and abilities, including simple tools and/or other equipment and use of basic math and reading skills.
Physical Demands:
  • Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Job occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting up to 100 pounds.
Desired Qualifications
Previous experience working with animals.
