The CU Department of Psychiatry sets the standard for Education and Training of leaders in psychiatry and mental health care, conducts ground-breaking Research that aims to eradicate suffering due to psychiatric and substance use disorders, provides ready access to state of-the-art mental health preventions and interventions across the continuum of care, and collaborates with the community and other key stakeholders to promote well-being among all Coloradans. We accomplish this vision in a manner that respects, values, and advocates for the dignity and worth of each individual and family. Nature of Work The Division of Addiction Science, Prevention, and Treatment is the largest research-focused Division in the Department of Psychiatry with 9 research faculty and 15 federally funded grant awards among them. The Division also provides an unparalleled addiction research training and mentorship environment for medical students, residents, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. The Division's research programs include basic science (i.e. genetics, epigenetics), human laboratory studies, medication and behavioral treatment development, deep brain stimulation, and clinical trials research, including affiliation with the NIAAA and NIDA Clinical Trials Networks. The Division is also known for research expertise in the effects of cannabis on neurocognition and health across the lifespan. The Division of Addiction Science, Prevention and Treatment is comprised of three strong & inter-related components: Clinical/Treatment, Research, and Education/Training. The strong relationship between the Division's research and clinical programs facilitates & accelerates the pace at which research is translated into clinical practice. The Division's community- based medication assisted therapy program serves more than 1000 individuals throughout the Denver/Metro region. The 40-year-old Addiction Research Treatment and Services (ARTS; https://www.artstreatment.com) program for individuals with complex psychiatric and substance use disorders emerging from a prison setting has been a stalwart collaborator with the Division of Community Corrections and the Justice Department in Colorado. In total, the Division includes 31 faculty and an Addiction Fellowship program with funding for 3 fellows per year. In collaboration with the University of Colorado Hospital, the Center for Dependency and Rehabilitation (CeDAR; https://www.cedarcolorado.org) has been ranked by Newsweek as the number one facility to receive substance abuse treatment in Colorado, particularly for those with a comorbid psychiatric disorder in Colorado. This year, CeDAR was ranked #2 nationally. In addition to its clinical excellence, CeDAR is known as a preferred site for medical students, psychiatry residents, psychiatry and addiction medicine fellows to train. CeDAR provides an interdisciplinary training site for physician assistants, social workers, and nurse practitioners. A new Division Director would have access to clinical populations across the Denver/Metro region, particularly in the area of opioid and cannabis use disorders. Current senior faculty are resubmitting a P50 application to examine the impact of cannabinoids on health outcomes across the lifespan. Recent NIDA funding to the Department will accelerate the exploration of deep brain stimulation in methamphetamine addiction. NIAAA funding ensures that the Division is on the cutting edge of research related to alcohol use disorders. Finally, NIMH funding supports research examining the genetic contribution substance use disorders. School of Medicine investment in PET/MR imaging and advanced multimodal imaging has created a new interdisciplinary center for brain neuroscience. Recent Department of Psychiatry recruitment for senior faculty provides opportunity for collaboration in areas such as cannabinoid sciences, novel drug development for SUDs and neuropsychiatric conditions, and intergenerational impacts on neurodevelopment and health, to name a few. The campus has made extensive investments in innovations, supporting the transition of investigator driven technology and therapeutic into industry and bringing industry investment into department/division endeavors. The Department of Psychiatry is creating a psychedelic research laboratory that will support current NIH-funded investigators in Psychiatry and General Internal Medicine. Recent philanthropy and industry partnerships support the program's success. Finally, under the leadership of C. Neill Epperson, MD, Robert Freedman Endowed Professor and Chair of Psychiatry, the Department of Psychiatry has experienced a period of substantial growth in all mission areas over the past 4 years. The number of lives touched by the Department's clinical, research, education and community outreach initiatives has increased by 427% to engage roughly 200,000 unique individuals in FY 22. Support for the Psychiatry Research Innovations (PRI) has provided core support for pre- and post-award activities for junior and senior faculty (https://medschool.cuanschutz.edu/psychiatry/research/psychiatry-research-innovations). With 5 cores, Biostatistics, Research Operations, Clinical Research Support, Research Education, and Grants and Contracts, the PRI has aided more than 144 unique faculty, staff, and trainees to submit 118 grants (57% of the Department's total volume), 20 publications, and 16 regulatory documents in 2 years. The Division Director for Addiction Science Prevention and Treatment would join other Division Directors, mission area Vice Chairs, the Director of Finance and Administration and the Chair of Psychiatry as a member of the Department of Psychiatry's Executive Leadership Team (ELT). The ELT is responsible for creating goals and objects that move the Department towards its strategic vision of Brain Health for All for Life. Each year ELT members work with their administrative dyadic partner to put forth FY goals that are then presented to the ELT. Accountability for meeting FY goals rests with the Division Director or Vice Chair. The entire ELT as well as Department cores such as the Program Management Office, Revenue Cycle Management, and the PRI are engaged to support the success of Divisional leadership. The Department of Psychiatry is comprised of 5 Divisions and two, soon to be three offices. Divisions include Adult Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Science Prevention and Treatment, Neuroscience, and Community Population and Public Mental Health. The two current offices are the Office of Education, and the Office of Psychological Science and Practice. The new Office of Innovations will be officially established with a new Vice Chair appointment in November 2022. Neill Epperson, MD. Salary Offered or Salary Range MD and/or DO The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at Associate Professor: $220,000 to $245,000. Professor: $250,000 to $300,000. PhD and/or PsyD The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at Associate Professor: $120,000 to $130,000. Professor: $162,000 to $200,000. This information represents the 25-50 percentile of the salary range which is reflective of a candidate with 1-7+ years of experience. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
