General Purpose of Job: The Quality Coordinator has responsibility for the development, implementation, and monitoring of quality improvement and patient safety activities for designated quality collaboratives/registries. The goal of the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC) is to improve the health of Michigan through sustainable, high-value healthcare. It is a partnership between Michigan hospitals, physician organizations, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan/Blue Care Network. Working in conjunction with the many specialty-specific Collaborative Quality Improvement (CQI) programs in BCBSM's Value Partnership Program, MVC aims to understand variation in healthcare use, identify best practices, and lead interventions for improving care before, during, and after hospitalization. The program improves healthcare quality across Michigan through rigorous performance feedback, empirical identification of best practices, and collaborative learning. This position is responsible for accurate and timely submission of data to meet mandatory organizational reporting requirements set forth by governing bodies including, but not limited to, the following:
- The Joint Commission (TJC)
- Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), including:
- Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR), Core Measures
- Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR)
- Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Quality Reporting (IPFQR)
- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) programs
- Electronic Clinical Quality Measures (eCQMs)
- Other programs and/or registries as assigned.
Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Collecting, analyzing and reporting clinical data elements as required for participation in the Michigan Value Collaborative (MVC), a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan-funded Collaborative Quality Initiative (CQI).
- The Quality Coordinator will be required to independently manage the case load and report data to MVC according to established standard and deadlines.
- The Quality Coordinator will actively engage in MVC activities and identify opportunities to improve the quality of care in the inpatient setting by working with physicians, nurses, other clinicians, and administrators to develop strategies to improve performance.
- Other responsibilities will include attending consortium-wide meetings and data abstractor meetings as a representative of the institution, acting as a resource regarding the consortium within the institution, maintaining regular contact with the MVC clinical champion(s) and other members of the team at the institution, preparing for and being available for site audits by the MVC Coordinating Center, resolving data discrepancies, and responding to Coordinating Center requests in a timely fashion.
- Employees in this role typically analyze, compare and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.
- Identifies/develops aggregate summaries of Quality Improvement data and information and takes this information through the flow of quality reporting, that includes but is not limited to:
- Maintains current knowledge of laws, regulations, healthcare trends and accreditation standards; provides education, and coordinates the preparation, monitoring, and developing of mechanisms to comply with standards and surveys.

- Medical staff quality improvement activities
- Committee quality improvement activities
- Outside organizational information
- Benchmark activities
- Public reporting of quality data.
- Responsible for the accurate and timely submission of data to quality monitoring and benchmark organizations: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) including Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) and Outpatient Quality Reporting (OQR), CMS Core Measures, and CMS eCQMs.
- Monitors and researches changes with the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program, Hospital Readmission Reduction Program, and the Hospital-Acquired Conditions Reduction Program.
- Works closely with Health Information Technology and Services for regulatory reporting.
- Responsible for the accurate and timely submission of raw data files to software vendors.
Job Requirements

* Healthcare professions requiring licensure in the State of Michigan, must have and maintain current licensure. |
Work Experience |
* Minimum 3 years of clinical experience in a diverse healthcare setting. * Demonstrated knowledge regarding clinical quality, including: data management tools, lean principles, and analysis. * Previous experience with clinical chart review, data abstraction from medical records, and/or analyzing and interpreting processes of care and clinical outcomes |
Education |
* Bachelor's degree in Nursing, healthcare, or related field. * A Master's degree in an applicable field - preferred. |
Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Ability to work independently and effectively manage multiple competing/shifting priorities and deadlines with minimal direct supervision. * Evidence of ability to assess competing priorities, manage workflow and meet operational deadlines in a complex organization. * Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral) and the ability to successfully work with multidisciplinary teams. * Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google Suites (e.g., Docs, Sheets, Drive), DropBox, and Zoom. Preferred: * Experience with TJC and CMS mandated reporting requirements. * Experience with data collection in clinical research or quality improvement. * Experience with quality improvement implementation. * Collaborative Quality Improvement (CQI) project experience. |
