Position description

The University Writing Center at UC Merced has the mission of promoting the value of writing across disciplines and outside of academia to support campus writers and enhance their approaches to writing.

Writing Consultants (Remedial Tutors) work closely with student peers to support their learning by engaging and encouraging students in a reflective writing process focused on revision as rethinking and reconsidering approaches to their work. The responsibilities of Writing Consultants include working closely with students to improve reading, analytical and critical thinking, and research writing. In addition, Writing Consultants are expected to work collaboratively on projects in support of the University Writing Center's mission (workshops, outreach events, social media, etc.).

Requirements of the position include:



  • Commitment to a fixed semester schedule
  • Participation in mandatory orientation/training prior to the start of instruction
  • Participation in mandatory bi-weekly staff meetings (Fridays, 3:00 - 4:30)


Qualifications
Basic qualifications

  • Completion (with a passing grade) of WRI 10: Reading & Composition (by end of Spring 2024).
  • Familiarity with the University Writing Center's mission and policies.
  • Effective communication skills with peers, faculty, and staff (both oral and written).
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion, and serving the needs of a culturally, linguistically, and educationally diverse community.

Additional qualifications

  • Enrollment as a UC Merced Undergraduate student in Fall 2024

Preferred qualifications

  • Completion of/enrollment in WRI 110
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency
  • Previous tutoring experience
