Position description

Research Specialist - Mackenzie Laboratory

University of California, San Francisco

The MacKenzie Lab, located in the Regenerative Medicine Building on UCSF Parnassus campus, is seeking a highly motivated and talented candidate interested in conducting basic and translational research to understand the genetics of congenital disorders and developing new therapies to treat them. Our work involves both research in animal models and as well as patient samples, in the broad area of maternal-fetal precision medicine.

Responsibilities include:



  • Performing molecular biology techniques and immunology techniques on animal and human samples from ongoing pre-clinical and clinical projects of fetal therapy in the lab.
  • Coordination of patient samples.
  • Administrative and laboratory management duties.
  • Onboarding and coordination of lab personnel including staff research associates (SRA's) and volunteers.


The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in multiple research projects depending on the candidate's skills and level of interest. Individuals who are looking to contribute to paradigm shifting, cutting edge research in the field of genome editing and fetal therapy are preferred.

Candidates should have excellent interpersonal communication skills, strong organizational skills and high attention to detail, strong analytical and problem solving abilities, the ability to work independently and as a member of a team, familiarity with wet lab techniques, familiarity with IACUC submissions and maintenance, and experience working with mice.

Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must have a baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or a related field or at least 4 years of experience with laboratory experience.

Specialist appointed at the Assistant rank must have a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or a related field or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of years of laboratory experience.

Specialist appointed at the Associate rank must have a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or a related field or 5-10 years of laboratory experience.

'See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $82,100.
