Position description

Liu Lab - Junior Specialist

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE - Anatomy

Description

The Liu lab is seeking a Junior Specialist to join our group and contribute to new and ongoing projects. Using Drosophila fruit flies as a model system, our lab studies the cellular and molecular basis of nutrient-specific appetite, and how these mechanisms contribute to diet-induced obesity and other metabolic disorders. The candidate will be expected to contribute to these research directions, by using techniques including fly genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, neuronal imaging, behavioral analyses, etc. An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, be familiar with the literature, develop new ideas, and participate in procurement of funds, where appropriate. Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations, and perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen. Depending on performance and workload, mentorship of other trainees, and scientific writing will be available.

Required Qualification (Applicants must meet requirements by the time of appointment):

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.

We are seeking at least a 1-year, preferably 2-year commitment. We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace in our lab, and welcome applicants from underrepresented backgrounds to join us.
