Position description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering invites applications from qualified candidates for one or more Assistant Project Scientist positions in the laboratory of Professor Laura Marcu.

The position will focus on novel optical spectroscopy and imaging techniques for current and future pre-clinical and clinical applications of fluorescence lifetime technologies.

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to research in their academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter, expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), they are not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. They will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

RESEARCH (90% EFFORT)

This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of biomedical imaging. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. They will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. The candidate may supervise students regarding the technical aspects of the research, pre-clinical and clinical studies, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results, validation with pathology, planning follow-up experiments. The candidate will also help with project management and coordinate research activities in the laboratory.

Publication:

The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters in the field of biophotonics and biomedical imaging. These publications may be independent or in collaboration with other members of the research team.

Grant Acquisition:

The candidate will assist in acquiring proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)

The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)

The candidate will engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies. If invited, the candidate is expected to serve on appropriate Academic Federation committees (including the departmental ad hoc committee for merits and promotions). The candidate will engage in University Service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. The candidate will also assist in carrying out functions essential to the efficient operation of the laboratory, including, but not limited to, development and maintenance of computational infrastructure, computer backups, and of creation databases and open sources. Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position.

POSITION AVAILABLE/CLOSING DATE

As openings occur, appointments are made contingent upon availability of funding. The posting will remain open to accommodate Marcu lab needs.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

-Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Biomedical Engineering , or related fields.

-Experience with software development (python, databases/SQL, matlab, etc) on Linux and Windows OS.

-Experience working with DICOM data and medical imaging.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

-Demonstrated experience with signal processing, computational imaging, image reconstruction, medical image analysis, and AI / machine learning methods for advancing foundational biomedical imaging science.

-Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization and to external research and education audiences.

-Organized and self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.

-Ability to manage multiple assignments through prioritizing tasks and managing time.

-Analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

-Experience with optical spectroscopy and imaging data analysis and visualization.

-Familiarity with relational databases and cloud-based platforms.

-Enthusiasm for translational/biomedical research and open-source software.
