Position Title

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Viola or Non-Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice of Viola

The Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin seeks an outstanding performing artist and teacher of viola to join our faculty. The successful candidate will have an exceptional reputation as a performer and will demonstrate the ability to teach undergraduate and graduate viola students at the highest level.

Position Description

Teach individual lessons to undergraduate and graduate viola students as well as supervise recitals, student creative research, and DMA capstone projects; coach ensembles and sectional rehearsals; organize weekly studio classes and promote an active and healthy studio culture. Recruit, develop and retain a viola studio of the highest quality via local, regional, national, and international outreach and performing. Liaise and collaborate with ensemble colleagues in orchestra, chamber music, New Music Ensemble, and Early Music Ensemble. Engage in service activities within the strings and ensembles divisions, the Butler School, and the University. Potential for growth into leadership roles. If appointed on a tenure-track, maintain professional activities appropriate for a tenure-track position at a Tier 1 research university, including developing national and international visibility as a creative artist and/or scholar. This position begins August 2024 and requires relocation to Austin, TX.

Rank, salary and tenure status dependent on candidate qualifications. We are seeking to hire either a tenure-track assistant professor who will build a highly reputable professional performance career alongside the academic responsibilities of this faculty position or a non-tenure track assistant or associate professor of practice whose position will be more focused on instruction, though it will allow for some continued performance activity. Both tracks are intended as long-term hires with oversight of and responsibility for the viola studio.

Qualifications

DMA or MM with significant professional experience. Demonstrated commitment to preparing young musicians for twenty-first century performing and teaching careers via high professional standards, superb pedagogical skills, advocacy and outreach, thoughtful selection of repertoire, and active mentoring. A record of excellence and potential for future achievement as a performer is required if tenure-track and preferred if non-tenure track. Evidence of dedication to successful teaching and mentoring is desired, especially demonstrated ability to adjust teaching methods to satisfy the needs of individual students from different backgrounds and with different goals. A candidate with significant experience with and an established record of successful teaching, student recruitment, and student retention at a university or conservatory is preferred.
