Facilities and Grounds Technician (full-time)

The Facilities Technician maintains and repairs equipment, buildings, and physical grounds throughout all the facilities operated by Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana (GCSI). The Technician performs general repairs, preventive maintenance, relocations, and installations while continuously focusing on quality, safety, customer relations, and performance. The Technician ensures the accurate data input and completion of assigned work orders through the department's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Example Duties and Activities

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and completes routine maintenance of facility and physical grounds at all GCSI locations to ensure a safe and productive work environment, certify product quality, guarantee customer satisfaction, and promote continuous improvement.

  • Travels to off-site locations by company service vehicle to perform grounds services and routine maintenance, including painting, carpentry, plumbing, basic electrical, and furniture relocation.

  • Disassembles mechanical equipment and tools, repairs or replaces worn or broken parts, and reassembles. Adjusts parts of mechanical devices as needed. Inspects completed repairs. Performs preventative maintenance as scheduled.

  • Operates basic hand and machine tools adhering to all safety procedures.

  • Ensures timely updating and completion of work orders using the CMMS inputting maintenance data and repair information.

  • Communicates daily and works effectively and professionally with Facilities management, customers, service contractors, and others to coordinate scheduling and repair activities.

  • Maintains all training requirements for the position, while seeking out opportunities for continuous development and growth.

  • Cross-trains and assists in other areas to build skill base and value within the department.

  • Carpentry Skills - Proficient at measuring, wall anchoring, drywall finishing, and installing hardware. Has worked with a variety of hand tools.

  • Communication Skills - Articulates thoughts and expresses ideas effectively using oral, written, visual, and non-verbal communication skills, as well as listening skills to comprehend customer and employee needs.

  • Teamwork - Works well with others and makes valued contributions to the outputs of others in order to assist the team or project to achieve the required outputs.

  • Reading Technical Documents - Reads, understands, interprets, and follows technical diagrams/documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, electrical schematics, and procedure manuals.

  • Technical Knowledge - Has familiarity with computers, tablets, and Smartphones for a variety of applications and email correspondence. Prior Experience using a CMMS to handle work orders and PM checklist is an additional plus.

  • Deductive Reasoning - Thinks plausibly and makes sound judgments when following instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form adhering to applicable regulatory and safety requirements.

  • Organizational Aptitude - Plans and attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing multiple tasks in an organized and timely fashion. Exhibits careful attention to detail and follow-through with a focus on managing deadlines.

  • Autonomy - Takes initiative without waiting to be directed, does what is asked, and works until the job is completed. Takes ownership of mistakes and learns from them rather than makes excuses.

Preferred Competencies

  • Facility Maintenance Expertise - Has worked either as part of a team or individually focused on the general upkeep of a building or buildings and the surrounding grounds. Adept at constructing, installing, maintaining, and repairing equipment and/or building fixtures. Has familiarity with troubleshooting issues and finding the root cause and fixing the problem.

Other Requirements

  • Background Screening - All candidates must pass a pre-employment background check. Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and qualify under the district's insurance carrier when driving a district vehicle. Additionally, will submit to and pass a 10-point drug screen if accidents occur.

  • Hard to Very Hard Physical Work - Is able to spend time in excess of 8 hours standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and crouching. Uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaches with hands and arms. Can climb, balance, talk and hear. Has the ability to move and lift up to 50 pounds. Can manage exposure to loud noises, outside weather conditions, and moving mechanical parts. Will be occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. There is a risk of electrical shock and vibration.

  • Visual Acuity - Has close, distance, peripheral, color vision abilities, and is able to adjust focus.

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
