Position description

ASSOCIATE or FULL SPECIALIST - DUAN LAB

The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco, is currently accepting applications for an Associate or Full Specialist position in the laboratory of Dr. Xin Duan. Specialists are expected to engage in specialized research in the retina and the brain and to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions, and may participate in University and Public Service.

The Specialist will study in the field of neural development and regenerative medicine, with intensive training in neural development and signaling mechanisms regulating early neural development; rich knowledge and strong experiences in vector construction, such as expression vector, shRNA vector etc.; skills at in situ hybridization of early embryos and in utero electroporation onto the mouse developing cortex; skills at the culture of primary embryonic neurons; skills at engineering knock-in and knock-out; experience in mentoring junior graduate students and technicians.

Required Qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • Specialists appointed at the full rank must possess (or in the process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
  • The candidate must have organizational and collaborative skills.
  • Must be adaptable, reliable, and willing to learn.
  • Excellent communication skills are essential.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
  • Applicant must have all requirements met by time of hire.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Candidates with a terminal degree and strong research background in the appropriate field.
  • Prior research/wet lab experience and basic molecular biology and chemistry knowledge is preferred.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,500 - $181,800.
