Job Summary

The Janitor maintains the building by providing custodial services. The Janitor reports to the Lead Worker with support from the Assistant Project Manager, and cares for the facilities. Maintaining these responsibilities will help to ensure the health, safety and security of the public. Successfully obtain an interim and full DoD Secret Clearance.

Primary Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.

  • Maintain building interior by dusting and polishing furniture, equipment, mirrors, and fixtures; wash windows, counters, walls, ceilings, and woodwork; sweep, scrub, clean and vacuum carpet, furniture; resupply soap and paper products in rest rooms and other amenities.
  • Maintain building accessibility and appearance by picking up papers and trash.
  • Remove trash by emptying trash containers, transport materials to disposal area, and collect recycling materials.
  • Keep equipment operational by following the Lead Worker's operating and care guidelines, completing operator repairs and parts replacement.
  • Perform cleaning based on cleaning frequencies and schedules unless otherwise requested by supervisor and report back to supervisor any refusals of services or access that impact cleaning frequencies and schedules.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Work closely and communicate positively and professionally with all co-workers, lead workers and management.
  • Maintain continuity between shifts by documenting cleaning actions, noting areas requiring additional care or monitoring.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s)

  • Must be able to pass and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance required.
  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) preferred.
  • At least one (1) year custodial experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of the use of Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of chemicals and products preferred.
  • Team building preferred.
  • Decision making skills preferred.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is frequently required use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects tools or controls. The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, swooping, kneeling, lifting heavy objects, operating medium-weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, sweeping and mopping floors and moving desks and furniture. The incumbent is required to do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions.

Note: Operating floor polishers and waxers are particularly hard on back muscles.

The incumbent must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 70 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

The incumbent works on a daily basis with dangerous and toxic cleaning products that can be very harmful to one's health if not properly utilized. The incumbent also regularly cleans up blood, saliva and other bodily fluids that are unpleasant to deal with. The condition of washrooms is often unpleasant.
