Elementary & Special Education Program Supervisors (part-time/temporary)

General Summary of Position:

University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking part-time program supervisors with interest and experience teaching elementary or special education in public schools to supervise teacher candidates in their practicum. Program Supervisors observe, coach, and train undergraduate candidates seeking teacher licensure, working collaboratively with teacher preparation faculty on supervision protocols, and executing the state mandated Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP). Supervisions typically occur 1-2 times per month on weekdays between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., in schools located primarily in the Merrimack Valley. Supervisors observe and meet regularly with teacher candidates during their practicum.

Job Duties:



  • Attend CAP trainings prior to the start of the semester provided by UML
  • Attend seminar meetings which pertain to CAP requirements
  • Support supervising practitioner in implementing CAP requirements by providing information about evaluation, rubrics and evidence to develop a shared understanding of the candidate's performance
  • Communicate regularly with seminar instructor about progress of teacher candidate(s)
  • Maintain regular communication and coordinate evaluation process with supervising practitioner and teacher candidate
  • Conduct formal observations (at least 4 for one semester practicum) and document candidate's progress
  • Conduct formal meetings with supervising practitioner and teacher candidate and provide constructive feedback to improve candidate performance
  • Gather evidence of candidate performance and complete required formative and summative assessments using an online CAP platform


Minimum Qualifications (Required):



  • Master's degree in Education
  • At least 5 years of teaching experience in elementary or special education in public schools
  • Possess a Professional License in elementary education or special education
  • Strong communication and organization skills and ability to work collaboratively with elementary school and university faculty
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and collegiality
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Demonstrated commitment to a culture of diversity, respect and inclusion


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education
  • Experience supporting novice teachers (as a mentor, coach, administrator, or teacher educator)
  • Experience teaching in an inclusion classroom and working with students with disabilities and classified English Learners
  • Familiarity with CAP


Special Instructions to Applicants:

This is a part-time, temporary, non-unit, non-benefited position.

The position is typically available each semester, with review of applications in July/August for the Fall semester and November for the Spring semester.
