Duties/Responsibilities

The Department of Medicine is seeking outpatient academic general internists to serve as clinician educators in the Division of Geriatrics, Palliative, & Primary Care at the University of Minnesota. These faculty will work in the Primary Care Clinic at the M Health Clinics and Surgery Center on the east bank of campus.

Clinical duties:

The University Primary Care Clinic serves three unique patient populations:

  1. Complex primary care: patients who have one or more chronic diseases managed by subspecialists at the University.
  2. University community: professors, administrators, and staff who work at the U.
  3. Local community: people who live in the nearby surrounding neighborhoods, including Seward, Highland Park, and Prospect Park.

The Primary Care Clinic is located within the Clinics and Surgery Center (CSC), a modern facility which opened in 2016 and houses the outpatient practice of M Health Physicians at the University, with access to advanced imaging and laboratory testing seven days a week. There is also outpatient IV therapy through the Specialty Infusion and Procedure Center.

Our faculty physicians have clinics scheduled Monday through Friday in four hour blocks; 7 am - 11 am, 11 am - 3pm, and 3 pm - 7 pm. We also staff a Saturday morning clinic, no more than 6 per academic year. We have flexibility in creating a clinic schedule to suit a variety of needs. One of the weekly four hour blocks will consist of virtual care via video visits, which can be done from home or from an office on campus, with flexible start and stop times. Evening/weekend call duties are minimal and fully supported by Fairview Nurse Advisors triage.

Academic duties:

Faculty have numerous teaching opportunities, including precepting Internal Medicine residents in continuity clinic and also hosting medical students on the Essentials of Clinical Medicine rotation. Faculty can engage in preclinical medical school teaching as course director, small group facilitator, or lecturer. Our faculty regularly present topics to the IM residents through our Lunch and Learn series and the Internal Medicine Education Days (IMED). Opportunities are available for GME-level interprofessional teaching and collaboration across the Academic Health Center.

Faculty receive protected time (0.15 FTE) to facilitate teaching and curriculum development, research projects, presentations at academic meetings, peer reviewed publications, and other academic pursuits. Most teaching roles within the medical school also come with FTE support, to allow adequate time to devote to educational efforts. Candidates should have a commitment to clinical excellence, education, and quality improvement. The division has a strong mentoring program for all faculty to support them in their career development and pathway to promotion.

We offer a competitive salary, excellent fringe benefits, and an intellectually stimulating environment. Access to weekly Department of Medicine conferences, such as Grand Rounds and Morbidity and Mortality, enhances the experience for students, trainees, and faculty alike.
