Edgewater Federal Solutions is seeking a Risk Analyst (Technical Project Manager 1) to support a major national laboratory.

The Technical Project Manager 1 supports risk management for capital asset projects while developing foundational knowledge and practical experience under the guidance of experienced risk professionals. This is a junior, developmental role focused on learning project risk management, maintaining accurate risk documentation, and supporting routine assessments and reporting.

The selected candidate will learn risk management practices aligned with DOE G 413.3-7A, Risk Management Guide, and the capital asset project process under DOE O 413.3B and applicable institutional requirements. Work will consist of clearly defined assignments with regular direction, mentoring, and review. Training will include identifying and documenting risks, supporting risk assessments, and learning the fundamentals of Monte Carlo analysis.

Responsibilities

Assist with identifying and documenting risks that could affect project scope, cost, schedule, or technical performance.

  • Work with risk owners and project team members to gather information and draft risk statements, including causes, potential consequences, and supporting assumptions.

  • Update and maintain risk registers, including risk owners, probability and impact assessments, handling actions, due dates, and status updates.

  • Participate in risk review meetings, document discussion outcomes, and follow up on assigned action items.

  • Learn to assess risk probability and potential impacts using established criteria and guidance from experienced analysts.

  • Develop an understanding of the capital asset project lifecycle, including critical decisions and how risk management supports planning, execution, and closeout.

  • Learn the fundamentals of cost and schedule risk analysis, including estimate uncertainty, probability distributions, and Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Assist with gathering and checking analysis inputs, running established risk models under direct guidance, and documenting assumptions and results for review.

  • Prepare routine risk summaries and reporting materials using established formats.

  • Identify missing or inconsistent information and bring questions or potential changes in risk exposure to senior staff for review.

  • Collaborate with project managers, project controls staff, engineers, and other team members to understand project activities and support accurate risk documentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, project management, business, mathematics, statistics, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of project management concepts, including scope, cost, schedule, and deliverables, gained through education, training, or work experience.

  • Ability to organize information, review data for completeness and consistency, and maintain accurate records.

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other standard office applications.

  • Ability to follow established procedures, manage assigned tasks, and work collaboratively.

  • Willingness to ask questions, incorporate feedback, and develop skills in project risk management and quantitative analysis.

Desired:

  • Introductory exposure to project controls, engineering, construction, data analysis, or a related field through coursework, internships, or employment.

  • Familiarity with basic statistics and probability concepts.

  • Exposure to DOE projects or capital asset project processes.

Training and Level of Responsibility

Prior experience with Monte Carlo simulation or specialized risk software is not required. Training, mentoring, and supervised practical experience will be provided.

The selected candidate will initially perform routine support tasks, with assignments increasing in complexity as skills develop. Risk assessments, model inputs, analysis results, and reporting products will be reviewed by experienced personnel. Approval of risk assessments, validation of models, and risk acceptance or funding decisions remain with designated senior personnel and project leadership.
