How You Will Make History Here...

This position is responsible for developing and validating thermal, hot-fill, and aseptic processes for new products and process improvements, ensuring food safety while maintaining product quality and manufacturability. This is a highly technical role requiring a strong foundation in food science, engineering, microbiology, or related discipline, along with relevant experience in thermal processing. The position works closely with Product Development, Quality, Engineering, Packaging, Marketing, Manufacturing, and external business partners to support successful product launches and strategic initiatives. The position will work under the guidance of a Process Authority while independently executing technical studies, analyzing data, and making process safety recommendations.

The individual may also be responsible for supervising personnel who assist with executing tests, collecting data, and performing thermal process calculations. The individual supports the development of SOPs, testing protocols, and policies related to Food Safety standards.

What You Will Do...

Principal Accountabilities

  • Develop thermal processes for products within a business, brand, region or project to ensure food safety and quality under plant processing conditions. This is accomplished through evaluation of product formulas and procedures; design of a test protocol considering any variability in the ingredients, unit operations, filling equipment, sterilization and other process-related equipment; collection of data from these tests; and conducting complex calculations to recommend appropriate lethality values. At times, it may involve hands-on work running validation studies as well.
  • Perform validation and qualification studies on various types of processing and packaging systems used to manufacture hot fill, aseptic, and retorted products in the manufacturing plants.
  • Perform appropriate testing and data analysis to help resolve process deviations from the manufacturing plants, including making recommendations on product disposition.
  • Assist in testing, developing and implementing new technologies in the area of thermal processing which provide quality improvements, cost savings and productivity improvements.
  • Support ingredient supplier and co-manufacturing initiatives by conducting thermal process audits/assessments and providing review of process requirements and process deviations as needed.
  • Prepare and submit FDA process filings under the supervision of a Process Authority.
  • Assist with development of Company policies regarding Food Safety standards for thermal processing including retorted, hot fill and hold and/or aseptic processing.
  • Represent Process Safety group at various cross-functional meetings at corporate and plant level while engaging with senior management to clarify Process Safety expectations and requirements.

  • Work with manual and automatically controlled pressure vessels, various types of data collection equipment and laboratory instruments.
  • Able to work with specialized computer programs to evaluate process deviations, calculate lethality values and interface with various data collection sensors.
  • Ensure that tests are conducted as intended and that data is accurately, completely, and clearly documented in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • The position requires the candidate to be able to utilize technical data and insights into clear outcomes to make food safety related recommendations.

Working Conditions

  • The role includes working in office setting, laboratory, pilot/process simulator, and manufacturing environments. Some work areas may be hot or noisy and may require standing for extended periods, lifting materials or test packages, and operating process equipment.
