Job Description

The Support Systems Administrator (Expert) provides advanced technical leadership and hands-on support for a highly specialized academic and clinical dental environment. This role leads the design, integration, and optimization of systems supporting advanced graphics, 3D dental imaging, digital dentistry workflows, and enterprise clinical platforms.

This position requires deep technical expertise, strong judgment, and a willingness to explore emerging technologies in a production setting. An individual in this role is expected to take initiative, guide technical direction, mentor others, and operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment where adaptability and thoughtful risk-taking are essential.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Set up, configure, and maintain 3D scanners, mills, and associated digital dentistry hardware.
  • Manage Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and user permissions and resources, including network shares and printers, across clinical and academic systems.
  • Set up and maintain physical and virtual server environments, storage systems, and structured data environments, ensuring optimal performance, security, and availability.
  • Administer electronic dental record (EHR) systems, including axiUm, Ortho II, Viewpoint, and Dentrix, with emphasis on integration, reporting, and performance.
  • Administer MiPacs PACS x-ray storage and imaging systems.
  • Write advanced scripts using PowerShell and Python for server provisioning, automation, and configuration management.
  • Lead incident management, including root-cause analysis and long-term remediation, including development of, testing, and maintenance of disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity plans, including regular validation and improvement.
  • Document system changes, configurations, and updates to ensure accountability and continuity.
  • Coordinate with IT staff and institutional partners on complex troubleshooting and system improvements.
  • Mentor and guide junior IT staff, providing technical direction and knowledge sharing.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Contribute to system integration efforts across dental, academic, and enterprise platforms.
  • Participate in evaluation and implementation of new clinical, instructional, and imaging technologies.
  • Manage user access, permissions, and credentialing across multiple systems.
  • Monitor system performance, respond to alerts, and proactively address risks.
  • Image and deploy computers, including specialized high-performance and imaging workstations.
  • Administer and troubleshoot printer queues and print services.
  • Install, support, and maintain research computers, specialized devices, and non-standard hardware configurations.
  • Provide in-person and remote support for faculty, staff, and students using tools such as Bomgar.
  • Provide ExamSoft online testing support for students and faculty.
Shift

8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday through Friday

Minimum Qualifications

  • Familiarity with 3D imaging, CAD/CAM systems, scanners, visualization tools, or medical/dental imaging environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and troubleshoot complex hardware/software integrations.
  • Experience applying and evaluating AI tools to enhance system administration, automation, troubleshooting, or user support.
  • Experience building and supporting high-performance workstations, including systems optimized for graphics, rendering, or imaging workloads.
  • Advanced experience with Windows server and workstation environments.
  • High level of technical judgment and the ability to operate independently on complex issues.
  • A builder and optimizer mindset-comfortable designing, modifying, and improving systems.
  • Willingness to take calculated, thoughtful risks to advance technical capability.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with evolving priorities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, especially in ambiguous situations.
  • Effective communicator who can translate technical concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Resourceful, curious, and proactive in identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Have a driver's license, cell phone with data, and be able to lift 40 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with EHR systems, PACS platforms, or other clinical technologies.
  • Strong expertise in Active Directory, Group Policy, identity management, and enterprise configuration.
  • Extensive experience with scripting and automation, including Windows PowerShell and related tools, as well as Python.
  • Experience with virtualization platforms, storage systems, and server lifecycle management.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or 4+ years of similar work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, guide, and elevate colleagues.
  • Working knowledge of networking fundamentals and system performance optimization.
  • Experience working in Higher Education, Dental, or similar environment.
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $65,000 - $72,000 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
